A Grandparents Day lunch was held on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at Sweetwater Intermediate School. Shown above are Hope Peek, student at SIS with her grandmother, Glenda Bedwell and her great-grandparents, Billy and Irene Spears. The three traveled eight hours from Nashville, Arkansas to have lunch with their granddaughter. The lunches will continue at Sweetwater ISD schools this week.
Four-H members and youth interested in learning more about the 4-H food and nutrition project are invited to participate in a multi-county Food Fun Night on Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Ranch House located on the Taylor County Expo grounds in Abilene. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19. To register, call the Taylor County Extension Office at 325-672-6048. Cost for the camp is $5 for 4-H members and $10 for non-members, which includes supper. Registration may be paid at the workshop.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its 47th Annual Membership Banquet on Monday, Sept. 26, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The theme for this year's banquet is "Spotlight on Sweetwater".
There will be eight spaces open for businesses to "spotlight" their products/services. It is first come, first serve. There will not be a fee â€” however, you must be registered. Please call the Chamber for more information and registration.
Texas State Technical College will be hosting the Halloween Extravaganza once again this year. The date is Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011 from 6-9 p.m. in the Student Center at the TSTC Sweetwater campus. Student organizations from the TSTC campus as well as community organizations, church groups and youth groups will be providing fun and spooky games for the evening. Candy and games will be given away as prizes.
If anyone is interested in having a booth at the Halloween Extravaganza, contact TSTC as soon as possible.
First Financial Trust & Asset Management Company, N.A. today announced the election of Douglas Wayne Chowning as a Senior Vice President. Chowning will office at First Financial Bank, N.A., Sweetwater, and will manage the Sweetwater trust office. He is succeeding Michael D. Sheehan, Executive Vice President, who will retire on Dec. 31, 2011. The announcement was made by Kirk W. Thaxton, CTFA, President and CEO of the Trust Company.

Gerald D. Bales went missing from approximately 1/2 mile E. of FM-1170 on CR-181, SE of Maryneal, Texas. The personâ€™s home address is listed as 1565 N. Business 35, New Braunfels, TX 78130.
Bales has taken prescription medications and may be taking Zoloft and/or other anti-depression type medications currently.
Bales normally resides in the New Braunfels, TX area and was in Nolan County conducting business for a New Braunfels attorney on a ranch in far western Nolan County.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 32 calls for service, issued no citations and made one arrest on Sept. 13, 2011.
The SPD received 13, 911 calls.
