Sweetwater doesn’t start district play until next week, but should get an idea of what to expect this Friday when the Mustangs make a second straight trip to Midland to take on perennial private school TAPPS power Midland Christian.
It will also be a chance for coach Craig Slaughter’s team to get some redemption for this past Friday’s heartbreaking 28-26 loss to Midland Greenwood, and be in a much more positive frame of mind when it kicks off district Oct. 7 at Wylie.
Sweetwater High School’s tennis team lost a tri-match against Midland Christian and Andrews on Saturday in Midland. The team is at Snyder today starting at 4 p.m., and travels to San Angelo for a quad match on Saturday.
ANDREWS — After losing its 5-3A opener in Big Spring, Sweetwater’s volleyball team went to Andrews Tuesday for its final non-district match of the season and lost in three games by scores of 20-25, 17-25, 22-25.

The "Spotlight on Sweetwater" radiated during the 47th Annual Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Monday night, September 26, 2011 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
The banquet opened with a meal catered and served by the Sweetwater Chuck Wagon Gang. Following the dinner portion, Jacque McCoy, Executive Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the attendees before Judge Tim Fambrough brought the invocation.
Rodney Foster, the previous recipient of the Outstanding Young Citizen award and the incoming Chamber President, was the presenter of the 2011 Outstanding Young Citizen.
"Do you know how hard it is to be outstanding for 365 days?" Mr. Foster joked.
He offered his thanks to the community for his award last year--calling it an honor and humbling, before announcing this year's Outstanding Young Citizen, Ray Cornutt.
"Our recipient has a "can-do" attitude and willingly volunteers every time he is needed," said Mr. Foster about Mr. Cornutt.
"It takes all of us working together to make our community great," began last year's recipient Brenda Stirl while making the award presentation, "and I truly am proud to be a part of it."
Before making the announcement, Mrs. Stirl thanked the selection committee, the Chamber and those that submitted the nominations before making the presentation of the 2011 Outstanding Female Citizen, Leah Andrews.
"This award is presented to someone who has made great contributions to the community, church, job and home...and I think [Leah Andrews] has done just that."
Last year's recipient of the Outstanding Male Citizen award, Joe Bagby, passed away shortly after receiving the honor. In his absence, Jim Wilks along with Joe's wife, Paula, made the presentation to this year's honoree, Vershell Smith.
Mr. Smith was born in Ballenger, Texas in 1929. He was an honor student, a band member and worked in his father's service station while in high school. He even helped his father keep the service station open 24 hours a day during World War II.
Last year's award winner was Bennett and Associates; David Bennett was on hand to make the presentation of the 2011 Business of the Year to Wind Energy Turbine Services, or WETS.
The company opened its doors in February 2007 under the ownership of Mark Meneses, Larry Martin, Jason Hefner and James McCasland. Since that time, the industry has made nation-wide strides in assisting and contracting with companies for their wind farms.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 37 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Sept. 26, 2011.
The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served zero civil papers and made two arrests on Sept. 26, 2011.
