GREENWOOD — Once again, Sweetwater got off to a slow start in Friday’s non-district game at Midland Greenwood. But this time, the Mustangs’ comeback — make that comebacks — were not enough.
Greenwood twice built 14-point leads with the help of six Sweetwater turnovers. Then the Rangers (3-2) held on for dear life to survive a thrilling fourth-quarter rally by the Mustangs for a 28-26 victory.
It was an especially tough loss for Sweetwater (3-2), which exploded big plays all over the field — primarily through the air — and nearly forced overtime with an almost miraculous finish.
ROSCOE — Roscoe trailed just 6-0 after one quarter against Munday’s heavily-favored Moguls, providing some hope for the Plowboy fans who showed up for the school’s homecoming.
However, Munday dashed those hopes by finding the end zone six times over the next two periods en route to a 55-6 victory.
The only solace for Ros-coe fans was that the Plow-boys (0-5) avoided a shutout on Eduardo Gallegos’ 61-yard touchdown run with 4:42 to play.
BIG SPRING — Sweet-water’s volleyball team has made big strides this sea-son. But the Lady Mustangs were unable to pull off what would have been a big upset in Friday’s district opener at Big Spring.
The Lady Steers, ranked No. 9 in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 3A poll, swept past the Lady Mustangs by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-15.

Sweetwater Red (1-4) got its only points on a 43-yard pass from Seth Peeples to Nathan Weidebusch in the fourth quarter but came up just short at Mustang Bowl. On defense, Kris Duran had an interception and tipped pass and Chris Castro had a tackle for a loss.
“We played hard and are proud of the kids’ effort,” said coach Al Hunt.

The Sweetwater JV Red team jumped out to a 33-0 lead after the opening per-iod as they improved to 4-1 this season.

The Future Sweetwater class of 2012 started their program on Wednesday morning at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the program is designed for students to learn in a hands-on, interactive environment which allows them to have fun and bond while they learn and problem solve. The Future Sweetwater program follows the same basic setup and curriculum as Leadership Sweetwater, but is geared towards the youth.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its 47th Annual Membership Banquet on Monday, Sept. 26, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The theme for this year's banquet is "Spotlight on Sweetwater".
There will be eight spaces open for businesses to "spotlight" their products/services. It is first come, first serve. There will not be a fee — however, you must be registered. Please call the Chamber for more information and registration.
The BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics competition recently received a donation from Ludlum Measurements, a major sponsor of the program. Don Ludlum, Larry Ludlum and Richard Smola of Ludlum Measurements are shown presenting the check to BEST Steering Committee members Joni Coons, Austin Mullins and Director Terry Blankenship. The next round of competition will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15, for Practice Day at the Sweetwater TSTC (Texas State Technical College) campus.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.38, six cents less than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.Â
The national average is $3.56, also six cents less than last week. The statewide average price is 18 cents less than the national average. The most expensive gasoline average in the state is in Amarillo at $3.47. Ft. Worth is reporting the least expensive average in the state at $3.30 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Sweetwater’s gas price is currently $3.48 for a gallon of regular unleaded.
