December 8th
The three and four year old classes at Cornerstone Christian Preschool were selected as the December Artists of the Month at the County-City Library. The preschoolers’ artwork included stockings, Christmas lights, gingerbread men, handprint and aluminum snowflakes, bubble and finger print snowmen and a handprint snowman.
Maloney’s Pharmacy was the December 2011 host for the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce coffee event. Many attended the event and enjoyed pastries and other treats and looking around the gift shop while networking with other chamber members. The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 42 calls for service, issued three citations and made no arrests on Dec. 6, 2011.
The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

SWEETWATER, Texas – A Texas District Court judge has dismissed two appeals of the order issued by the Texas Environmental Quality Commission (TCEQ) in December 2010 granting air quality permits for the Tenaska Trailblazer Energy Center. The appeals had been filed by the Multi-County Coalition and the Sierra Club.
Judge Rhonda Hurley of 98th District Court in Travis County on Oct. 20, heard oral arguments on the TCEQ’s and Tenaska’s pleas arguing that the Court did not have jurisdiction since the appeals were not filed in a timely manner.
On December 7, 1941, the attack on a U.S. Naval Base on the Hawaiian island of Oahu rocked the nation to its core. Seventy years later, the "day which will live in infamy" still resonates in the minds of Americans.
Leading up to the 1930s, conflicts regarding raw materials heightened, resulting in rising tensions between the United States and Japan. The Japanese goal to expand upon China led to threats from the United States to put an end to iron, oil and steel provisions.
The annual Christmas parade, themed this year as "Under the Christmas Tree," has been rescheduled and will be starting at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12. The parade will begin at Higginbotham’s and will continue to Pecan Street. Judging will be at 4 p.m. in the Higginbotham parking lot. Candy may be thrown carefully to the crowd. Entries are not required to be lighted, just decorated. Walking entries are welcome, as are strollers, dogs on a leash, skaters, those riding scooters, bicycles or go-carts. Small children must have an adult walking with them.
Sweetwater’s boys came within an eyelash of playing their third consecutive overtime game when they faced Merkel here Tuesday.
But a game-tying 3-point shot by Merkel’s Chase Bowman came just after the final buzzer sounded at Mustang Gym as Sweetwa-ter escaped with a 45-42 victory.
The game was typical of the way things have gone this season for the Mustangs (4-5), who have had six of their games decided by three or fewer points.
The Roscoe girls, coming off a first-place finish at Blackwell’s tournament, stayed on a roll Tuesday with a 48-47 home win over Baird in overtime.
Lynnsi Moses and Sara Kingston each led Roscoe (5-3) with 14 points. Mir-ian Solis had eight, Faith Boren six, Carolina Perez four and Jacinda Morales two. Roscoe trailed 25-20 at halftime, but the teams were tied 45-45 at the end of regulation.
Roscoe’s boys (0-5) lost to Baird, 66-37. Jesus Leanos had 16 and Keeston Ford 10 for Roscoe, while Brant Burnett had five, John Hermosillio four and Luke Rovig two.
The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club is once again sponsoring Star Search for Sweetwater schools. Each school in Sweetwater holds an individual contest at their school and a certain number of acts are picked for the Star Search final competition in January. Proceeds from the Star Search finals go towards awards for the A's R Us program at the end of each school year. This year's Star Search schedule is as follows:
• Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m., Sweetwater High School;
• Thursday, Dec. 8, at 9 a.m. East Ridge Elementary; and 4 p.m. Sweetwater Middle School;
