Shown are the winners of the elementary division, Madison Sosa, Kyla Daniel, Mia Valdez and Isabel Ortega won first place with their hand jive dance to a Grease song; Kyrsten Smith won second place singing "Wind Beneath My Wings," accompanied by her grandfather Skeet Smith on acoustic guitar; and Collin Stafford won third place with his "Techno Collin" light show.
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital is offering a free diabetic support group meeting on Feb. 1, 2011 at the hospitalâs Emergency Department Classroom (200 E. Arizona Ave.). Beginning at 2 p.m., the hour-long program will focus on appropriate exercise routines for individuals with diabetes.
âProper and adequate exercise is just one of the critical components in managing diabetes,â said Rosa Best, chief nursing officer at Rolling Plains Memorial. âIn addition to supporting your bodyâs efficient use of insulin, exercise also contributes to your overall health.â
Jessie Jack (Horne) Payne, age 94, of San Antonio, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at Vitas Morningside Manor in San Antonio, Texas.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Phillip Thomas officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Lillian Darrellyn "Lillie" Burwick, five months old, of Blackwell, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Daniel Dotson officiating. Interment will follow at Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Burwick died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 21, 2010, in Abilene.
Nolan County area basketball teams found the going tough on Friday.
The Roscoe boys and girls lost at Stamford by scores of 86-36 and 42-28, respectively.
Highlandâs teams hosted Roby but they experienced a similar fate, as Roby won the boys game 61-25 and slipped by the girls 30-28.
Blackwellâs teams hosted Bronte and the boys lost 57-24, while the girls fell 58-28.
Sweetwaterâs Paxton Kelley goes up over two Brownwood defenders in Fridayâs district game at Mustang Gym. The Lions won the game 72-45. Sweetwater goes to Snyder on Tuesday.

Caden Smith of Roscoe was named on Sunday by the Abilene Reporter-News to its All-Big Country Football Super Team as a defensive lineman.
Smith, a 6-3, 240-pound senior, recorded 109 tackles this season and received honorable mention all-state honors. He also received honorable mention as a quarterback on the All-Big Country Class 1A team.
Three Sweetwater players â tight end Connor Stafford, linebacker B.J. Walker and defensive back Cameron Fox â received honorable mention last week to the Class 3A-5A All-Big Country Football Team announced by the Abilene Reporter-News.
Stafford caught 14 passes for the Mustangs, while Walker recorded 88 tackles and Fox had three intercep-tions, eight passes defended and three fumbles forced or recovered. In addition, Walker ran for 650 yards.
Three nights after nearly shooting Big Spring out of its own gym in a 24-point road win, the Sweetwater girls basketball team was forced to go inside to stay with state-ranked Brown-wood here Friday.
The new strategy worked pretty well for most of the evening as the teamâs starting posts, Kendra Crosson and Alicia Finn, both scored in double figures for the Lady Mustangs. But Brown-woodâs outside shooting â and Sara Byrd in particular â was the difference as the No. 21 Lady Lions took con-trol in the second half to pull out a 46-39 win.
