Sweetwater firefighters extinguished a blaze at 920 Roscoe Street in Sweetwater on Thursday afternoon around lunch. According to authorities and family members, a woman and her boyfriend were in an argument in the mobile home when the boyfriend told her to get out of the house and set it on fire. "He wanted to die," said the woman's sister. The man later exited the home before firefighters put out the fire. He was later picked up by the Sweetwater Police Department and has been taken to a mental health facility for evaluation. There were no injuries caused by the blaze.
Law enforcement officials continue searching for missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn. Nine agencies are actively working the case with 30 law enforcement officers and many more working behind the scenes. Those working on the case are the Colorado City Police Department, the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the FBI, the Snyder Police Department, 32nd Judicial District Court, the Scurry County Sheriff's Office, the Secret Service and the Child Advisory Center.
This is Dana Cooper's second visit to Java Jax to perform since last year.
The first artist to perform at Java Jax's cozy set up corner stage last year during the Rattlesnake Round-Up was country/folk musician Buch Hancock of Lubbock. Since then there have been many other talented musicians to visit and entertain.
Smith: When did you really start playing music and enjoy playing to an audience?
Cooper: "I started at the age of 12 and was on the road by the age of 19.
Funeral services for Leo LeDell Hollon, Sr., 88, of Sweetwater will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Jimmy Don Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Roby Cemetery.
Services will be directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. Mr. Hollon died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at his home.
Born Dec. 22, 1922, in Coleman, he married Faye Allison in 1951. He was a farmer and had worked in road construction, moving to Sweetwater 22 years ago. He was a veteran and attended Faith Harvest Pentecostal Church. His hobby was fishing.
Both Sweetwater basketball teams are on the road for non-district con-tests today, but Roscoeâ€™s girls jump into District 9-A, Division I action as they travel to Munday.
The Sweetwater girls head to Mineral Wells for their final District 5-3A tuneup while Sweetwaterâ€™s boys go to Ballinger. The girls will host Snyder next Tuesday to start district; the boys are also home Tuesday to face San Angelo Lake View in their final non-district game. Both Sweetwater teams won at Roby on Tuesday.
In Class 1A, Division II, Highlandâ€™s teams will host Trent while Blackwell en-tertains Garden City.
The search continues for missing 13-year-old Hailey Dunn from Colorado City.
However, the efforts have expanded with the involvement of over 20 officers from various agencies, including the 32nd District Attorney's office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Rangers and even the FBI.
The Nolan County Coliseum hosted this monthâ€™s Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce coffee event and Sweetwater residents and chamber members filled the lobby of the coliseum. Many enjoyed coffee, cookies and networking at the event.
Shahala Strother was the winner of a drawing held at the Sweetwater Reporter for a free six-month subscription and a $25 gift card. To enter the contest, residents had to donate six canned goods or a new unwrapped toy to benefit the Sweetwater Goodfellows.
Funeral services for Jeffrey Alan Woods, 20, of Roscoe will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Rev. Frankie Santiago will officiate and burial will be in Palava Cemetery. Services will be directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. Mr. Woods died on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, in Roscoe.
Sweetwaterâ€™s Kinsey Browning (4) hits a layup over a Roby defender on Tuesday. The Lady Mustangs won 42-30. Sweetwater goes to Mineral Wells on Friday for its final pre-district game.
