The Sweetwater Elks Lodge will be having their annual Free Throw "Hoop Shoot" contest on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with a 9:30 a.m. start. The contest is open to all boys and girls ages 8 through 13. Contestant age groups will be determined by their age as of April 1, 2012.
For instance, if a contestant will be 7 years old on April 1, 2012, he is too young to participate; if a contestant will be 14 years old on April 1, 2012, he is too old.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 28 calls for service, issued four citations and made two arrests on Dec. 20, 2011.
The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served two civil papers and made two arrests on Dec. 20, 2011.

Sweetwaterâ€™s JV girls basketball team defeated Colorado City 38-18 on Tuesday to improve their season mark to 11-3, but the JV boys lost 45-26 as they dropped to 11-5.
For the JV girls, Sha-neese Brown and Sydney Vanderbilt scored eight points, Larissa Locklar and Claire Williams six, Mikki Reschman four and Maddie Jones, Taylor McPherson and Karlee Murff two. For the JV boys, Brandon Howell scored seven points while Marquees Jenkins had six, Trey Taylor four, J.P. Poe three and Mike McCoy, Isaiah McGee and Duan-ta Williams two each.
Over the weekend, Sweetwater emergency services personnel responded to a wreck on the 1400 block of Lamar Street. A Ford Mustang was reportedly driving south on Lamar when it lost traction and struck the telephone pole.Â The south bound lanes of Lamar were shut down for a little while as they removed the car and replaced the pole. There were no serious injuries reported.
The Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) Board of Directors met for their final meeting of 2011 on Monday night, Dec. 19, 2011 at the Administration Building.
Sweetwater Middle School (SMS) brought their campus report to the board through the school's principal and vice principal, Jeff Withrow and Danette Price, respectively.
The holiday season is always a festive time of year, but it can also have an impact on your physical and mental health. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is urging the community to be aware of their surroundings to keep themselves and loved ones safe through this joyous time of year.

The City of Sweetwater City Services Department-Solid Waste Division is announcing their 2011-2012 Christmas/New Year holiday schedule.
The City of Sweetwater business offices will be closed on Friday and Monday, Dec. 23rd and 26th for the Christmas holiday.

Sweetwaterâ€™s basketball teams split non-district games with Colorado City on Tuesday, with the girls playing at Mustang Gym and the boys on the road.
The girls improved to 10-9 on Tuesday as they came away with a solid 54-39 victory, but the boys (5-11) fell 47-45. The local teams are off until they play in holiday tournaments at Breckenridge and Anson, respectively, that are sched-uled to begin Dec. 28.
Troy Gentry will be speaking at the Evangelical Methodist Church tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 21 at their service starting at 6:30 p.m.. Troy and Jenny are raising their money to go as missionaries to Old Mexico.
Troy is the son of John and Paula Gentry. John is the pastor of the Evangelical Methodist Church, located at 700 Lamar Street.
He will also speak during the Sunday, December 25 service starting at 11 a.m.
