Steers hit 11 treys in 64-35 win

The first quarter of Tues-day’s District 5-3A basket-ball game between Sweet-water and Big Spring featured five lead changes and ended with the visitors up by just a point, 11-10.
Midway through the sec-ond quarter, it was still a contest as the Mustangs trailed by just three (17-14). But the Steers caught fire at that point, going on a 15-1 run to lead by 17, 32-15, at halftime, and never looked back en route to a 64-35 win at Mustang Gym.

Lady Mustangs fall to Lady Steers, 58-39

After falling behind 10-0 in the first two minutes of play, Sweetwater twice rallied to within striking distance of Big Spring in Tues-day’s district girls game.
Both times, however, the Lady Steers responded with a decisive run as they beat the Lady Mustangs, 58-39, at Mustang Gym.
Sweetwater (0-3, 14-14) narrowed the lead to 16-12 on a three-pointer by Ken-dra Crosson early in the second quarter, only to see Big Spring (1-2, 17-7) run off the next nine points.

Sub-varsity teams get one victory

The Sweetwater junior varsity girls picked up the lone victory against Big Spring in sub-varsity action here Tuesday as they prevailed, 23-19, to improve to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in district play.
Kayla Chowning and Claire Williams had six points, Maddie Jones five, Taylor McPherson four and Shaneese Brown two for Sweetwater.
The freshman girls (14-3, 1-2) lost 43-28. Cierra Knox scored 10, Abby McPherson seven, Bianca Castillo and Jas-mine Reddic four, Lexi Castillo two and Gabby Reyes one.
The JV boys (13-8, 0-2) lost, 44-30, in their game with Big Spring.

Highland, Blackwell girls collect easy wins

Highland and Blackwell rolled up lopsided victories in area girls high school basketball action Tuesday.
Highland — ranked No. 18 in Class 1A, Division II in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll — knocked off Hermleigh, 58-33, to improve to 6-1 in District 11-A, Division II and 18-6 overall.
Sierra Allen had 21 points to pace the Lady Hornets, while Kara Hughey had 11. Also scoring were Morgan Monroe and Lora Stewart with five points and Beth Richburg, Kaylee Martin, Schyler Kimbrell and Megan Thompson with four.

Grand Jury indicts 16

The Nolan County Grand Jury handed down 16 indictments, 14 of which were sealed.
Sarah Hernandez was indicted for possession of marijuana, a state jail felony. The indictment states that Hernandez possessed a usable quantity of marijuana in the amount of five pounds or less, but more than four ounces on Nov. 26, 2011. Her bond was set at $5,000.
Vanessa Lashell Lynch was indicted for driving while intoxicated, a third degree felony. The indictment states that Lynch operated a motor vehicle on Nov. 12, 2011, while intoxicated.

Steers to kick off stock show

Shown are Sweetwater Intermediate School fourth grader Zoee Jeffrey and Sweetwater Intermediate School fifth grader Julia Rees, combing their steers during weigh-in on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. Today from 1-7 p.m. will be the swine weigh-in and all other animals will be weighed in from 4-7 p.m. The steer show will begin at 6 p.m. and the heifer show will follow the steer show tonight. The Nolan County Livestock Show will continue throughout the week.

School board trustees wear many hats

As citizens who serve children and represent their communities, individual school board members face complex and demanding challenges. Yet, few people fully understand the scope and far-reaching implications of board members’ responsibilities. All Texans should recognize the vital contributions of these men and women and focus attention on the crucial role these elected leaders play in the education of our children. Marshall Tucker Band to headline Outlaws and Legends Music Fest

Abilene will host the second annual Outlaws & Legends Music Fest March 2 and March 3 in celebration of Texas Independence Day. The festival kicks off Friday, March 2, with more than 10 artists performing an unplugged acoustic song-swap show from 8 p.m. to midnight, followed on Saturday by the biggest one-day, one-stage Texas music festival from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. The night of March 3 will cap off with a spectacular encore of the artists sharing the stage playing their biggest hits from midnight to 1 a.m. Proceeds will once again benefit the Abilene-based Disability Resources Inc.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 51 calls for service, issued no citations and two four arrests on Jan. 16, 2012.

The SPD received 28, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 400 block of Elm.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1200 block of Ragland.

Arrested by SPD:
• Dalton Dauel, 21 — Family violence assault/impede breath.
• Terry Wayne Davison, 53 — Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 31 calls for service, served one civil paper and made eight arrests from Jan. 13-16, 2012.
