School board trustees honored with proclamation

Nolan County Commissioners and Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough recently signed a proclamation designating January as School Board Appreciation Month in Nolan County.
The proclamation stated that the mission of the public schools is to meet the diverse educational needs of all children and to empower them to become competent, productive contributors to a democratic society and an ever-changing world.

Deaf Action Center offers presentation

Representatives from the Deaf Action Center (DAC) in Abilene will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. to talk about their services. The DAC serves people who are deaf and hard of hearing with a comprehensive range of services. They will educate and train people in coping and communication strategies, assistive devices and Relay Texas Service and more. DAC assists the hard of hearing, deaf, deaf/blind, vision impaired, speech impaired and mobility impaired, in receiving free communication devices from the State of Texas.

Brookshire’s donates to Sweetwater Goodfellows

The local Brookshire’s grocery store recently donated $250 to the Sweetwater Goodfellows. Brookshire’s employees won the money in a competition against other Brookshire’s grocery stores for community service hours worked by employees. Statewide gas price average increases one cent

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is one cent more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.  The current statewide average is $3.23.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 28 calls for service, issued five citations and made three arrests on Jan. 17, 2012.

The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

Nettie Annlee Tollison

January 19, 2012

Nettie Annlee Tollison, age 93, of Lafayette, Louisiana, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at Lafayette Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Roscoe Cemetery with Rev. James Baker officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Nettie was born Dec. 15, 1918, in Arlington, Texas, to James Jefferson and Lura Buffie (Jackson) Tollison. She worked in the health care industry for over 40 years.

SHS lifters excel at 1st meet of year

Sweetwater High School’s powerlifting teams did well at season-opening meets this past Saturday in Miles and compete again today at meets in Big Spring.
The SHS boys were first and the girls second at Miles this past weekend.
SHS had four individual boys winners in their re-spective weight classes — Jay Lomas (790 pounds) in the 123-pound class, Sam Nemir (1,270 pounds) in the 181-pound class, Mateo Gonzales (1,390) in the 242-pound class and Angel Caballero (1,005) in the su-perheavyweight class. Sam Nemir also won the Best Lifter Award for the meet.

7th grade hoop champions

The seventh grade Red team won first place at the Sweetwater Middle School girls basketball tournament held Jan. 7 as they defeated Merkel 9-5 in their first game and then held off Midland Christian, 31-27, in the championship game. The team includes, back row from left, coach Jill Locklar, Stephanie Castillo, Kensi Chowning, Maddie Berry, Kaitlyn Foster, Lauren Jones, Brittany Peeples; front row, Christa Martin, Annaliese Espinoza, Davina Walker and Rhylee Meneses.
