Caring for an elderly or ill relative is not an easy task and can sometimes take a considerable toll on the caregiver’s physical and emotional health. With this in mind, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) and the Area Agency on Aging are joining together to provide the community with a special program on Feb. 8. Valuable information will be shared during this free event on resources and supports available for caregivers.

When the City Commission presented the deteriorating condition and temporary closing of the local SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building for reconstruction this January, a local church stepped up to fill the void left by the facilities.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church has opened its doors for SNAP attendees to use as a temporary meeting location. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, folks can bring their own lunch or their purchased meal from SNAP — the kitchen remains open during this time — and dine in the church's fellowship hall.

Every 10 years, Texas requires that marks and brands be re-registered in the county or counties in which you operate.Â
The next re-registration period began Aug. 31, 2011, and concludes Feb. 29, 2012. After the conclusion date, all marks and brands that have not been re-registered are automatically available for registration by another party.Â
The cost of registering brands in Nolan County is $16 per location. Payment may be made by cash, check or credit/debit card.
Stella Mae Smith was born Sept. 20, 1921, in White Flat Community, Texas. She passed away Jan. 29, 2012 at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen, Texas. She married Cleave A. Smith of the Palava Community, Texas on Dec. 2, 1939.
Officials with the Sweetwater Police Department say area residents should remain vigilant as they investigate reports of a possible phone scam where callers are identifying themselves as payday loan representatives, asking for payments on loans taken out by those they are calling. According to Sweetwater Police Officer Armando Renteria, a local resident received a call in which a person — with a foreign accent — claimed to be collecting for a payday loan company that she had a loan with, wanting immediate payment on the loan.

More than 1.7 million Texans 18 years of age and older are living with diabetes. Although the disease can be deadly, it is easily managed through a healthier lifestyle. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is offering a free diabetic support group meeting on Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the hospital’s emergency department classroom, located at 200 E. Arizona Avenue.
The support group meeting will feature guest speaker Dr. Timothy Jones, a new family practice physician at RPMH. This event is free of charge and does not require any type of membership.
The Sweetwater Intermediate School Jump Rope Team performed at halftime during the Varsity girls basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012. They will be performing Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Abilene Christian University at the 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. games and on Thursday, Feb. 2 at Western Texas College at the 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. games.
