Large crowd at Fields of Faith event

October 11, 2012

Hundreds gathered at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 to join thousands of other youth on athletic fields all across the nation to share their Christian faith with fellow students during the seventh annual national Fields of Faith event.
This is the first event of its kind in Sweetwater. See more photos on Page 10 in Thursday's paper.

Don’t miss the Friday Night Fight

Sweetwater and Snyder football and volleyball teams will be squared off against each other for not only District 5 - 3A honors but for a "Friday Night Fight" for a cure for breast cancer. The two rival towns will come together for one cause.

Sheriff: County bond election will impact the city

Nolan County Sheriff David Warren addressed the Sweetwater City Commission during their regular meeting at City Hall on Tuesday morning, October 9, 2012.
The presentation was in regards to the upcoming county bond election, in which voters will cast ballots on the courthouse remediation and new jail facilities, and its implications for the city. A fact sheet was presented to commissioners, in which Warren prefaced that only facts were on the sheet.

TxDOT moves forward with construction plans on US 84 Nolan County bridge

The Texas Department of Transportation’s Abilene District is moving forward with plans to address damages to the US 84 eastbound overpass at west bound Interstate 20 in Nolan County after a collision in late September.

Sweetwater garners two top honors

At the Sweetwater City Commission meeting on Tuesday morning, October 9 at City Hall, City Manager Eddie Brown announced that Sweetwater was recently given two honors for outstanding achievements.
As part of his monthly report, Brown stated that the City of Sweetwater has once again received the GFOA (Government Finance Officers Association) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the fiscal year ending in 2011.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 38 calls for service, issued one citation and made three arrests on Oct. 9, 2012.

The SPD received 11, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 400 block of NE Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Henry Woosley, 26 — Warrant.
• David Daniels, 55 — Possession of marijuana.
• Jimmy Lambert, 55 — Driving while license invalid/possession of marijuana in a drug free zone/possession of paraphernalia.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served 10 civil papers and made two arrests on Oct. 9, 2012.

Clyde H. Ater

Clyde H. Ater was born in Roscoe, Texas, Nov. 2, 1917, to Horace and Elizabeth Ater. He and his parents lived in Sweetwater, Texas and they moved to a farm south of Roscoe when Clyde was about 7 years old, and his sister, Nina Mae was about 4 years old. After leaving high school, Clyde attended Draughan’s Business School in Abilene, Texas, and he studied accounting. While in that school he met Shirley Ford, and they married in 1937. In 1942, Clyde and Shirley moved to Portland, Oregon, where he worked in the shipyards until he was drafted to the Army in 1944.

Alice Ann Martindale

Alice Ann Martindale, age 74, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 at her residence.
Her body was cremated. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Ann was born on July 12, 1938 in Seymour, Texas, She was a homemaker.

Josefa Valenzuela

Josefa (Josie) Valenzuela, age 92, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Raul Ortiz of Fort Worth officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Mustangs take on fierce rival to start 4-3A action

On Friday, the real season begins for Sweetwater.
