First graders at Southeast Elementary School in Mrs. Amy Nixon's and Mrs. Bethany Bryan's classes put together care packages for troops over in Afghanistan.
Christopher Soles, father to student Madison Soles, and Mrs. Bryan's husband are two of the soldiers who will benefit from the care packages.
Mrs. Nixon and Mrs. Bryan had their students bring snacks, toiletries, magazines, movies, games and stationary to make up the care packages. High school students and community members donated as well.
Representatives from the Deaf Action Center (DAC) in Abilene will be at the health department on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. to talk about their services. The DAC serves people who are deaf and hard of hearing with a comprehensive range of services. They will educate and train people in coping and communication strategies, assistive devices and Relay Texas Service and more. DAC assists the hard of hearing, deaf, deaf/blind, vision impaired, speech impaired and mobility impaired, in receiving free communication devices from the State of Texas.
At the Sept. 19, 2012 meeting of the Blackwell Education Foundation, $67,891.95 was awarded to graduates of Blackwell High School. Students who graduate from Blackwell High School have the opportunity to earn up to $3,000 per year of attendance.
The scholarships are paid each semester to colleges, universities, technical schools or job training programs to assist students in furthering their education and making them "job ready."
Funeral services for Gerald Wayne Butler, 71, of Sweetwater, will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Rev. David Stevens will officiate. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Butler died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, in Snyder.
He was born Aug. 8, 1941, in Hamlin. He married Patsy Ann Speed on March 16, 1991, in Sweetwater. He worked for the city, loved music and playing the guitar.
Merritt Thomas â€ś M.T.â€ť Staten, age 88, of Sweetwater passed away on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, in Big Spring, Texas. A wake will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at McCoy Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012 at 2 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories, with Reverendâ€™s Robert Carey, Frankie Santiago and Tommy Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Carolyn Kay Alexander, age 64, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012 at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Ward Hayes, Dr. Travis Monday and Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Richard G. Ramirez, 50, of Sweetwater, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Okonkwo officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at 7 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Ramirez died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, in Abilene.
He was born Oct. 20. 1961, in Sweetwater. He loved dancing, playing pool, bowling and his favorite, watching wrestling and football.
Some losses hurt a little more than others.
That was the case here on Saturday as the Sweetwater volleyball team let what ap-peared to be a sure win turn into a five-game loss in a crucial District 4-3A match against Big Spring.
Sweetwater (1-2, 21-12) rallied from a 25-23 loss in the opener to win the next two by scores of 25-20 and 25-18, and was on the verge of closing out the match af-ter going ahead 22-18 in the fourth game.
But Big Spring went on a 7-1 run to win 25-23 and force a Game 5.

BROWNWOOD â€” After pulling within eight points of Brownwood with 6:52 left and then forcing the Lions to start consecutive possessions from inside their 5-yard line, Sweetwater was poised to complete a rainy fourth-quarter comeback here Friday.
Clinging to a 21-13 lead, Brownwood was pinned at its 2 after a 47-yard punt by Sweetwater quarterback Kaegan Jeffrey with 4:08 to play. But the Lions went to their wildcat formation, and Eddie Duque raced 95 yards before finally being dragged down at Sweetwaterâ€™s 3.
