A concerned local business owner hopes to inform the public about a scary situation. Leslie Brazelton, owner of Les' Barber Shop, shared with the Sweetwater Reporter in a phone interview that she recently tested positive as having the West Nile virus.
Though she is not certain, Brazelton thinks she may have been bitten by a virus-carrying mosquito while outside mowing the lawn at her house located between Sweetwater and Trent.
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) kicked cancer to the curb to celebrate survival stories and successes at their annual Breast Cancer Survivors' Luncheon on Friday, October 26 at the hospital classroom. This year's theme was "Give Cancer the Boot".
Following a welcome from RPMH administrator Donna Boatright and an invocation from Dr. Robert Eaker, guests enjoyed a pink-themed meal prepared by the hospital's dietary staff.
"Timelier work is one of the foundation blocks of Texas' reinvented human services eligibility system, and workers like Sammy Alvarez have had a lot to do with the improvement we've seen over the past few years," said Alvarez's award nominator.
According to his nominator, Alvarez recently provided outstanding customer service when he helped completed 437 overdue cases in the Houston area with the Health and Human Service Commission.
Funeral services for Darin Glenn Burwick, 27, of Blackwell, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at First Baptist Church Blackwell. Rev. Daniel Dotson will officiate and interment will follow at Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Burwick died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at his home in Blackwell.
Sammy Anderson, 26, of Abilene, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at a medical center in Dallas, Texas.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, with Richard Adkisson officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.
Sammy was born July 7, 1986 to Marshall Anderson and Beverly (Berning) Anderson in Poncatello, Indiana. He was employed by Dallas County as a computer technician.
Nolan Countyâ€™s six-man teams lost district openers on the road Friday. In District 7, Division I, High-land lost to Rotan, 76-62, as the Hornetsâ€™ five-game winning streak ended. In District 8, Division II, No. 6 Robert Lee broke a 30-30 deadlock after three quarters with a pair of fourth-quarter scores to beat Blackwell 46-36.

BIG SPRING â€” The big-gest game of the season for Sweetwater produced its highest-scoring and most lopsided win of 2012.
More importantly, Fri-dayâ€™s 42-9 victory catapul-ted the Mustangs (2-1, 4-4) into the forefront of the District 4-3A playoff picture and set up a monumental game with Monahans (2-1, 4-4) this Friday in Sweet-waterâ€™s final home game.
GORMAN â€” Despite one of its best offensive efforts of the season, Roscoe had six turnovers in a 42-21 loss at Gorman on Friday.
Roscoe finished with 323 total yards to Gormanâ€™s 332 in the contest, which leaves both teams 2-3 in district play with two games left.
Individually, two Roscoe players enjoyed big nights offensively by finishing with over 100 yards each. Eduardo Gallegos led all Plowboy rushers with 123 yards on eight carries. The top receiver, Shelton Toli-ver, had 110 yards on seven catches.
Roscoeâ€™s 21 points were its second highest one-game total of the season.
