The Sweetwater Independent School District SchoolÂ Board recently approved an early release day for all Sweetwater students on Wednesday, Dec. 5, due to Sweetwater Middle School hosting the District UIL Meet.
This early release will be for students only.
Regular early dismissal times will be followed: J.P. Cowen and Southeast Elementary â 12:15 p.m.; East Ridge Elementary â 12:20 p.m.; Sweetwater High School â 12:50 p.m.; Sweetwater Intermediate â 12:55 p.m.; Sweetwater Middle School â 1 p.m.
(AUSTIN)--Managing Editor Tatiana Rodriguez and Staff Writer Belinda Serrano of the Sweetwater Reporter were named to the 2013 Media Honor Roll, a program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), by Sweetwater Independent School District. The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools. Media representatives from more than 450 Texas newspapers, radio and television stations, and online publications were honored by their local school districts.
Musician, singer and songwriter Kristine Mirelle will bring her unique style and sound to the stage of the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 15, where she will play a variety of genres of music and for a wide demographic.
Mirelle, a Roswell, New Mexico native, will showcase her piano and voice talents by performing some of her original songs, as well as popular Christmas music, current radio hits from other popular artists and music geared towards children for easy sing-along.
A local employee of the Texas Department of Transportation was recently honored for his years of service to the agency. Mike Rosas, a transportation technician for the Nolan County maintenance office, was recognized for his five years of service to the department.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Prosper Cathy Moreno, 78, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Father Charles Okonkwo will officiate and interment will follow at Loraine Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be said by Lupe Medellin and Ester Rodriguez at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Moreno died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at her home.
Bernard Shelan (nĂŠ Shelansky) passed away Wednesday night, Nov. 21, at the age of 96 from natural causes. He was born in St. Louis, MO to Charles and Rae Shelansky and raised in South Philadelphia and Roscoe, Texas. A local football star, Bernie âThe Mouseâ Shelanskyâin spite of his small statureâwas awarded a football scholarship to Abilene Christian College, where he graduated in 1938 with a B.S. Degree in Physical Training and set a new kickoff return record that remained in tact for 20 years.

The Nolan County United Way (NCUW) is promoting their yearly campaign with the theme "Give Where You Live".
Their commitment to serve local entities is spear-headed by Wendy Smart, the Executive Director of the NCUW. Running solely on pledges, a board of volunteers from the community hope to impact the community with a caring power.
To donate to the local United Way, a one-time donation can be given through a payroll deduction or a quarterly basis. Each donation helps thousands of people in the area through nine agencies, who undergo an annual interview process.
The Sweetwater FFA chapter competed at the Area II Leadership Development Contest on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Howard Junior College. The chapter was well represented by four teams consisting of 12 members. These students advanced to the Area round of competition by placing in the top two of their event at the district level. Kyle Lambert placed second in Job Interview, advancing to the state contest in Huntsville on Nov. 30.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 68 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests from Nov. 21-22, 2012.
The SPD received 33, 911 calls.
