HERMLEIGH — After making the six-man playoffs with a thrilling last-second win a week earlier, Blackwell got off to a promising start in its Division II bi-district meeting with Loraine on Friday.
The Hornets, however, couldn’t finish what they started on this night after getting inside Loraine’s 20 on their first two possessions. Blackwell did tie Loraine, 8-8, in the second quarter, but it was pretty much all downhill from there as Loraine won 49-22 to advance into the next round of the playoffs and end Blackwell’s season.
Sweetwater High School’s basketball teams both lost on Friday. The SHS boys fell at Coleman, 48-44, in their season opener and the girls (3-1) lost to Abilene High, 48-42, at the SHS gym.
The boys were paced by Rhett Torres’ 17 points while Dylan Bennett had 12 and Deandre Gatson and Isaiah McGee six. The girls were paced by Suede Shirley’s 14 points, including two 3-pointers, while Kendra Crosson had nine and Shelby Cason and Jan-ell Walker six apiece for the Lady Mustangs.
