Edelmiro (Pops) Gutierrez

Edelmiro (Pops) Gutierrez, age 88, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Monday, Nov. 26, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel recited by Jim Petrie. Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Bowl is set to host two more playoffs

Another busy weekend of high school playoff football action is scheduled at Mus-tang Bowl with two more games on tap.
On Friday, a pair of Class 3A schools, Midland Green-wood and Graham, meet at 7:30 p.m. in a Division II regional. Greenwood, the No. 3 team in District 4-3A, is 9-3 while Graham, the champion of District 5-3A, is 11-1. The winner will face either Monahans or Gates-ville, who also play Friday, in the state quarterfinals.

SISD announces early release day

The Sweetwater Independent School District School Board recently approved an early release day for all Sweetwater students on Wednesday, Dec. 5, due to Sweetwater Middle School hosting the District UIL Meet.
This early release will be for students only.
Regular early dismissal times will be followed: J.P. Cowen and Southeast Elementary — 12:15 p.m.; East Ridge Elementary — 12:20 p.m.; Sweetwater High School — 12:50 p.m.; Sweetwater Intermediate — 12:55 p.m.; Sweetwater Middle School — 1 p.m.

Local media honored

(AUSTIN)--Managing Editor Tatiana Rodriguez and Staff Writer Belinda Serrano of the Sweetwater Reporter were named to the 2013 Media Honor Roll, a program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), by Sweetwater Independent School District. The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools. Media representatives from more than 450 Texas newspapers, radio and television stations, and online publications were honored by their local school districts.

Singer, pianist to perform at Municipal Auditorium

Musician, singer and songwriter Kristine Mirelle will bring her unique style and sound to the stage of the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 15, where she will play a variety of genres of music and for a wide demographic.
Mirelle, a Roswell, New Mexico native, will showcase her piano and voice talents by performing some of her original songs, as well as popular Christmas music, current radio hits from other popular artists and music geared towards children for easy sing-along.

Nolan County TxDOT employee earns service award

A local employee of the Texas Department of Transportation was recently honored for his years of service to the agency. Mike Rosas, a transportation technician for the Nolan County maintenance office, was recognized for his five years of service to the department.

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Prosper Cathy Moreno, 78, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Father Charles Okonkwo will officiate and interment will follow at Loraine Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be said by Lupe Medellin and Ester Rodriguez at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Moreno died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at her home.

Bernard M. Shelan: July 17, 1916-November 21, 2012

Bernard Shelan (né Shelansky) passed away Wednesday night, Nov. 21, at the age of 96 from natural causes. He was born in St. Louis, MO to Charles and Rae Shelansky and raised in South Philadelphia and Roscoe, Texas. A local football star, Bernie “The Mouse” Shelansky—in spite of his small stature—was awarded a football scholarship to Abilene Christian College, where he graduated in 1938 with a B.S. Degree in Physical Training and set a new kickoff return record that remained in tact for 20 years.
