Future, Leadership Sweetwater participants participate in sessions

The Future Sweetwater class recently had their City/County Session, touring many entities in Nolan County. The class began at the Sweetwater Fire Station and a tour was given by Sweetwater Fire Chief and Sweetwater Emergency Services Director Grant Madden. The class then traveled to City Hall on a fire truck to attend a city commission meeting. The class was welcomed by Edward Brown, City Manager. The class was given an overview of City Services by Carolyn Lawrence, Finance Director. Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda then gave the class a taser and weapons demonstration.

One dog available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has one dog available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male Labrador mix. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Two enter pleas in district court

Two people entered pleas to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, Nov. 20. District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas prosecuted the cases.
Billy Ray Amos, with attorney Kristen Postell, pled true to a motion to adjudicate his probation. Amos was originally put on probation on June 2, 2011 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony.
Court documents state that Amos intentionally caused bodily injury to Chris Rogers by stabbing/slashing Rogers in the body with a knife on Sept. 2, 2009.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 125 calls for service, issued seven citations and made three arrests from Nov. 16-18.

The SPD received 49, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Class C assault — 1600 block of Morris.
• Counterfeit — 500 block of E. Broadway.
• Theft — 800 block of Sam Houston.
• Theft — 1600 block of E. 12th.
• Family violence assault — 1300 block of Murrah.
• Family violence assault —  1200 block of Hickory.
• Information only — 200 block of Jenny George.

Arrested by SPD:
• Emma Tabuyo, 27 — Public intoxication.

Bowl to host pair of games on Friday

A pair of area-round high school playoff games will be held Friday at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl, with afternoon and evening matchups on tap.
At 2 p.m., Hamlin (8-3) and Eldorado (7-3) meet in a Class 1A, Division II con-test, with Idalou (8-2) and Bangs (8-3) set to meet at 7 p.m. in a Class 2A, Division II game at the Bowl. The Hamlin-Eldorado winner will advance to play either No. 1-ranked Munday or Wink in the next round, while the Idalou-Bangs win-ner will advance to the next round to face either East-land or Muleshoe.

Mustangs get 1st win; Lady ‘Stangs fall

The Sweetwater boys got into their first victory of the year by defeating Ballinger, 51-45, here Monday in the second half of a boys-girls doubleheader that involved three schools. The Mustangs are now 1-1 heading into the Thanksgiving break.
The Sweetwater girls did not fare as well, losing to Early 54-35 as they fell to 3-2 overall. Both teams will return to action Nov. 27 as the girls host Abernathy and the boys travel to Wall.

FBC recognized by Girl Scouts

First Baptist Church was recently recognized for their contribution to local Girl Scouts. Heather Caballero, local Girl Scout, presented Phillip Thomas, pastor at First Baptist Church with a plaque.
"I present this plaque to you on behalf of all Girl Scouts in Nolan County to say thank you, First Baptist Church, for allowing our leaders in Service Unit #722 to meet here once each month. Thank you."

County earns safety award

Nolan County received a 2011 Safety Award for its record of involvement and commitment to safety in the workplace, as well as for controlling workers' compensation claims.
To qualify for the Texas Association of Counties Safety Awards, the county must self-insure their workers' compensation through the Texas Association of Counties Risk Management Pool and successfully complete the safety award criteria. Nolan County was one of only 27 counties honored with a 2011 award.

Lake golf tournament benefits local family

November 19, 2012

A Thanksgiving golf tournament was sponsored by and held at the Lake Sweetwater Municipal Golf Course on Saturday, Nov. 17, to benefit a needy family through the Sweetwater Goodfellows.
All proceeds and donations from the "Adopt-a-Family" tournament will assist the Gonzales family from Roscoe — a widowed mother and her five daughters ranging from ages seven to 15 — in order to provide the family with Christmas gifts and their holiday dinner.
