DivorceCare: Surviving the Holidays is a warm, encouraging and helpful event. Featuring video instruction and group discussion, it helps you deal with the discomfort and awkwardness of separation and divorce during the holiday season.
Trinity Baptist Church will sponsor one of these seminars on Friday, Dec. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in their Family Life Center (enter through the Family Life Center entrance just off Santa Fe Street). Childcare is provided.

USDA authorizes emergency grazing of CRP acres

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie announced that Nolan County was authorized for emergency grazing use of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres for fiscal year (FY) 2013.
The following Texas counties are approved for emergency grazing: Armstrong, Bailey, Briscoe, Carson, Castro, Childress, Crosby, Dawson, Deaf Smith, Dickens, Donley, Floyd, Gray, Hale, Hardeman, Hemphill, Hockley, Kent, Lamb, Lipscomb, Lubbock, Nolan, Ochiltree, Oldham, Parmer, Potter, Randall, Roberts, Scurry, Sherman, Swisher, Terry, Wheeler and Yoakum.

Pearl Harbor: 71 years ago

Sunday, December seventh. Nineteen forty-one. Pearl Harbor on Oahu, Hawaii is attacked by Japanese forces.
"A date which will live in infamy."
Five minutes until eight a.m., Hawaii time, the island skies were full of Japanese planes, with bullets and bombs falling from the air during the first attack.
Fifteen minutes later, a bomb totaling almost one ton crashed into the USS Arizona battleship. The ship blew up, sank and trapped over one thousand men inside.

Suddenlink donates to WTCAC

The Sweetwater Suddenlink office recently donated toiletry items and bags to the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center.

Boy bitten by bat at SHS auditorium

December 7, 2012

On Tuesday, December 4, a local second grade boy was bitten by a bat at the Sweetwater High School auditorium.
According to reports from the boy's family and the superintendent of Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Terry Pittman, the second graders were at the auditorium to practice for their upcoming Christmas program. The bat was on the ground and was still alive when the boy made contact with it.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on Dec. 5, 2012.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1700 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 700 block of W. Oklahoma.
• Theft — 200 block of E. AVE C.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served one civil paper and made three arrests on Dec. 5, 2012.

• Rocky Flores, 30, Homeless — Criminal trespass.

Frank (Buddy) Allen of Buda, TX flew to Jesus on Dec. 5, at the young age of 63, due to a sudden onset of liver complications for which he suffered only a month.

SW gets split at Stanton

The Sweetwater boys lost but Sweetwater’s girls won in first-round basketball ac-tion Thursday at Stanton’s Hooptown Tournament.
The girls are in the semi-finals after beating Coaho-ma 42-29, while the boys had an afternoon consola-tion game after losing 50-33 to Sands in their opener.
Kendra Crosson poured in 23 points for Sweetwater’s girls (8-6), who advanced to play Stanton at 6 p.m. today in the semifinals. Sweet-water led 16-9, 25-16 and 32-22 at the breaks.
Shelby Cason scored nine points while Suede Shirley and Janell Walker had three and Elise Lawrence and Taylor McPherson two.

The Sweetwater girls fell to 0-4 after losing, 50-36, to Abilene Cooper in basket-ball action here...
