The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued two citations and made no arrests on Dec. 6, 2012.

The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Fraud — Sweetwater area.
• Information only — 1400 block of Lubbock.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Dec. 6, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Matthew Lee McQueen II, 21, of Sweetwater — Warrant/bond forfeiture.
• Juan Christian Gomez, 30, of El Paso — Warrant/surety withdrawal.

Chamber sponsors lighting contest

December 8, 2012

Christmas is a special time and many people show their pride by lighting their yards and homes. The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce wants to reward the best of the best.
The Chamber will be sponsoring the annual residential lighting contest for the Sweetwater and Roscoe communities. A group of judges will drive around town Dec. 17-19, to judge all homes entered in the contest with Christmas decorations and lights on display.

Every year, many groups, organizations, businesses and individuals devote many volunteer hours before, during and after distribution to the Sweetwater Goodfellows to make sure that families in need have a better Christmas. TSTC employees, fitness center members participate in Goodfellows toy drive

On Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 5, Texas State Technical College of Sweetwater employees and Fitness Center members met to collect toys and food for the Sweetwater Goodfellows. TSTC’s Staff Senate hosted the get together and served cookies and hot chocolate.

Federal politics may affect local hospital

During the Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors' meeting on Monday night, November 26 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), discussion was held on how upcoming political issues--namely the Affordable Care Act (also called "Obamacare") and the looming fiscal cliff, would possibly impact the local hospital.
Hospital administrator Donna Boatright acknowledged that there are several unknowns in the next year for both of the issues at hand. But the most immediate issues relate to the fiscal cliff and its impending cuts.

Three jailed after district court pleas

Two people were jailed this week after pleas were entered to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings.

Oma Jean Kinerd, age 77, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Friday, Dec. 7, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with friends officiating. Interment will follow at Nolan Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Oma Jean was born April 4, 1935, in Nolan County, Texas to Fred and Elvie Lee (Price) Kinerd. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for Jackson Paint and Body Shop for a number of years.

Emily Jeanette Whittington Boyer

Graveside services for Emily Jeanette Whittington Boyer, 84, of Sweetwater, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Roscoe Cemetery. Bishop Joel Davenport will officiate with interment to follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Boyer died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at the home of her daughter in Tullahoma, TN.
