ANSON â€” After enjoying a nine-day holiday break, the Sweetwater boys basketball team won its first three games at Ansonâ€™s three-day tournament to move over .500 for the season.
Sweetwater (8-7) opened the tournament on Thursday by getting pool-play wins over Roby (59-36) and Sey-mour (45-38) before completing pool play on Friday when the Mustangs topped Christoval, 56-49.
Sweetwater was to play Merkel, the other pool-play winner, on Saturday to end the tournament.

ABILENE â€” Manuela L. Flores, 88, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at St. Francis Catholic Church with Father Bhaskar Menden officiating. Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Anson, directed by Abilene Funeral Home. A wake service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at St. Francis Catholic Church.
Mrs. Flores was born May 17, 1924, in Karnes County, Texas to the late Ildefonso and Rafaela Longoria.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 35 calls for service, issued 13 citations and made no arrests on Dec. 27, 2012.

The start of a new year can bring a lot of change in a person's life, but for one local, a new chapter will begin as January 1 rolls around. After sixteen years, six months and 25 days, Patricia Broadwell--better known as "Treet"--will leave her varied post at the Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) to enter a new stage in life: retirement.

Chavela MuÃ±oz (Shorty) was named the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital 2012 Employee of the Year. The announcement of the winner was made at the annual Christmas celebration at the hospital on Dec. 19. Donis McCluskey, Director of Environmental Services, made the presentation along with Steve Holcomb, RPMH Board President. She received a plaque and $100. Donis described Chavela as a dependable, hard worker and a key member of the housekeeping team. Shorty had been with RPMH since 2008 as a Housekeeping Tech. She and her husband, Ralph, live in Sweetwater.

Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board are reminding spring 2013 Nolan County high school seniors that the Nolan County Foundation will be promoting its annual Scramble for Scholarships Golf tournament scheduled for April 20, 2013 to be held at the Sweetwater Country Club.
A local church youth group is offering middle school and high school students a new opportunity to ring in the New Year in a safe and fun setting.
The Salvage Yard is the sixth through twelfth grade student ministry at Emmanuel Fellowship Church in Sweetwater. The group will be sponsoring the "AllThingsNew - New Year's Eve Bash" on Monday, December 31 at the church, located at 1418 Hailey.
Doors to the event will open at 8 p.m. and there will be a $10 entry fee with food and drinks available. Each person will also be entered for chances to win door prizes, including $100 in cash.
The County-City Library hosted Story Hour on Thursday, Dec. 27, for local parents and children. Eloisa Hernandez (shown, far left) is shown reading to the children and their parents.
She also led the group through several songs and games. Parents and children were encouraged to participate in the activities.
