National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as fostering greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January and beyond. NIVW was the week of Dec. 2-8.
The health department wants to encourage residents to use preventive actions:
â€¢ Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
â€¢ Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Construction began on Monday, Sept. 10, for the new Love's Truck Stop in Sweetwater and has been continuing at a fast pace.
Expected completion is around the end of February 2013. The truck stop will also house an Arby's restaurant.
The land is 53.14 acres and is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hopkins Road and Interstate 20.
Kay T. Corderman, 98, of Sweetwater, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012 at Nolan Nursing and Rehab Center in Sweetwater.
Corderman will be cremated. Services will be planned at a later date under the direction of McCoy Funeral home.
Funeral services for Raymond Mitchell Zetzman, 88, of Roscoe, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at First Salem Lutheran Church. Pastor Chester McCown will officiate. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery with Military Graveside rites provided by the U.S. Navy.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Zetzman died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The Sweetwater and Highland girls both lost in their respective title games Saturday after advancing to the finals with semifinal wins on Friday.
Sweetwater (9-7) lost 38-35 in overtime to Mid-land Christian at Stantonâ€™s tournament after advancing with a 49-27 semifinal romp Friday over host Stanton.

Sweetwater girls host Brownwood â€” JV at 4:30 p.m., varsity at 6 p.m., freshmen at 7:30 p.m.
Sweetwater boys host Brownwood â€” freshmen at 4:30 p.m., JV at 6 p.m., varsity at 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe JV and varsity teams play at TLC starting at 4 p.m.
Highland JV girls host Albany, 4 p.m.
Highland JV boys and varsity girls and boys host Guthrie starting at 5 p.m.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s JV and freshman basketball teams traveled to Merkel this past Tuesday and the JV and freshman boys hos-ted Breckenridge Friday.
On Tuesday, the JV boys were defeated by Merkel 40-34 but the freshman boys beat Merkelâ€™s fresh-men 42-16. The JV girls are 11-0 after defeating Merkel 32-22, while the freshman girls beat Merkel 30-18.
Here are results for both the Highland JV girls and Roscoe JV boysâ€™ basketball teams in their games that were played this past Tues-day:
