Hospital board to fill open seat

The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met on Monday night, November 26 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) for their regular meeting.
In her Administrator's Report, Donna Boatright shared with the board that after eight years of service, board member Wayne Chowning submitted his resignation.
Hospital board chairman Steve Holcomb stated that Chowning gave great insight while on the board and appreciated his willingness to serve. On behalf of the hospital staff, Boatright praised Chowning for his service and his excellent leadership.

Suddenlink launches faster internet service in Sweetwater

Suddenlink announced it has begun offering its new High-Speed Internet 30.0 service in Sweetwater, featuring a download speed up to 30 Megabits per second (Mbps), the fastest residential service in the area.
High-Speed Internet 30.0 is enabled by Suddenlink’s deployment of cutting-edge industry technology called DOCSIS 3.0.  Suddenlink believes it is the only Internet service provider using this technology in its local service area. The company will continue to offer its 3 and 15 Mbps services in Snyder and Sweetwater.

Samuel (Sam) T. Rivera, age 77, of Sweetwater, Texas passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
A rosary will be held 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel, recited by Johnny Cave. Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 A.M., Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories with Nolan County Honor Guard. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Mustangs, Lady ‘Stangs are both 4th at Ballinger

The Sweetwater boys and girls basketball teams both finished in fourth place at their respective weekend tournaments in Ballinger.
Sweetwater’s boys (2-3) lost to Clyde 59-46 in their third-place game Saturday. Deandre Gatson led Sweet-water with 16 points.
The Mustangs had defea-ted Hawley 43-29 to open the tournament on Thurs-day and advanced to Frid-ay’s semifinal before losing to Ballinger 50-48. Jim Ned won the title by defeating Ballinger 63-29 on Satur-day. Two Sweetwater play-ers were named to the all-tournament team — junior Dylan Bennett and sopho-more Rhett Torres.

Highland girls win Bronte title

The Highland girls won all four of their games this past weekend to capture the title at Bronte’s tournament.
Highland (9-2) had little trouble beating any of its opponents at the round-robin event. After routing Hamlin 56-30 on Thursday, the Lady Hornets knocked off Miles 55-28 on Friday and then completed the tournament by whipping Bronte (40-14) and Winters (57-19) on Saturday.

FFB to serve hot chocolate after Monday’s parade

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will once again host the annual Christmas parade this year.
The parade will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012. Line up will begin at 4 p.m. in the Higginbotham parking lot. The parade will travel west to Pecan Street.
The theme for this year's parade will be "Peace on Earth." Remember, Santa cannot be on the float as it is the entry of the Chamber.
First Financial Bank will be serving hot chocolate on the west lawn immediately following the parade.

Republican Women of West Texas to host coffee event

On Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 at 10 a.m., the Republican Women of West Texas and State Representative, Susan King, will co-host a coffee at the Pioneer City-County Museum, located at 610 East Third Street in Sweetwater.
"The newly formed organization of the Republican Women of West Texas is proud of the support we have received from our State Representative, as well as from the Texas Federation of Republican Women; the Brown County Republican Women's Club; Jane Cansino (Senatorial District 28 Committee Woman and SREC Candidate, Resource Committee Chair); and others," said event organizers.

Lack of rain tragically impacts Lake Trammell

A sad situation in unfolding at one of the local lakes, in which Lake Trammell is reaching its lowest levels and wildlife is at stake.
Recently, some dead fish were found at Lake Trammell. Eddy Campbell, the utility director of the City of Sweetwater, said that he estimates that the lake is only about thirty feet wide by fifty feet long, and only about a foot deep.
Campbell stated that in his 25 years of work with the city, this is the lowest he has ever seen Lake Trammell. The lake is man-made and was constructed sometime in the 1920s.

Technicians gathered at hands-on wind energy event

On Thursday, Nov. 28, wind energy technicians of every level arrived at the Texas State Technical College West Texas campus in Sweetwater for a two-day hands-on training event.
WindTech 2012 brought students face-to-face with working professionals and offered them an opportunity to network, learn in hands-on settings and engage with the latest technology. The inaugural event was organized by the college, the Texas Wind Energy Clearinghouse and Windpower Engineering and Development, a leading industry magazine.
