Texas State Technical College Sweetwater will host a special discovery day on Friday, Jan. 27 for Veterans and their families.
VA support personnel, Veterans Services Officers, employers and TSTC faculty and staff will be on hand to answer questions. Tours of the Sweetwater campus will also be available. Food will be provided.
All active duty military,Â National Guard, reserve forces, military personnel that are separated, discharged or retired and military families are encouraged to attend.Â
The County-City Library is currently accepting donations of both adult and children hardback and paperback books, magazines and videos for the annual book sale which will be held Aug. 27 and 28 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
Come to the garage door in the alley behind the library to unload the donations during business hours. Call 235-4978 a few minutes before arriving at the library to enable staff to be ready to help.
The hours of the library are Monday from 1-6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
AUSTIN â€“ The Texas Veterans Commission announces the availability of $3 million in grants to be awarded from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veteransâ€™ Assistance.
Grant funds will be awarded to qualified charitable organizations, Veterans Service Organizations and local government agencies to address issues affecting Veterans and their families.Â Services funded to date include transportation to medical facilities, counseling for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), housing assistance, short-term emergency financial needs, Veteran courts, legal assistance and career training.
Military graveside services for Rev. H. Floyd Shifflett, 85, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Carolyn Easter officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. Military graveside rites will be performed by the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home
Shifflett died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
Holliday â€”Â Weldon Steen, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, in a Wichita Falls hospital. Visitation was from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15, in the fellowship hall of the First Baptist Church in Holliday. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, at Trent United Methodist Church in Trent, TX with Reverends Darryl Sewell and Norman Patton officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.
Mateo Gonzales of Sweetwater was among a handful of area high school football players to earn recognition on the All-Big Country Super Team announced Sunday by the Abilene Reporter-News.
The 5-10, 225-pound senior was named to the second team as a defen-sive lineman after recor-ding 43 solo tackles in-cluding 16 tackles for a loss, 32 assists and three sacks.

Sweetwater managed to outscore its state-ranked opponent in the second and fourth quarters of Fridayâ€™s District 5-3A opener at Mustang Gym.
But Wylie, ranked No. 22 in Class 3A, was ahead 27-8 after one period and rolled from there to a 76-49 win over the Mustangs.
Sweetwater (9-15) outscored the Bulldogs 11-9 in the second quarter to go into the dressing room trailing by 17 points, 36-19, before Wylie turned on the jets again with a 23-5 run in the third stanza that left Sweetwater trailing 59-24.
Facing the top-ranked and defending Class 3A state champion Wylie girls, Sweetwater turned in a fairly solid effort here Friday and even held a few leads in the early going.
But the Lady Bulldogs, and especially scoring ace Peyton Little, proved too much to handle as Wylie pulled away to win 71-45 behind Littleâ€™s 37 points â€” 30 of them in the first half.
Roscoe swept Rotan in a basketball doubleheader on Friday as both teams won for the first time in District 9-A, Division I play.
The Roscoe boys are 1-1 after edging Rotan 33-32, following a 42-26 win by the girls (1-2) in the opener.
Roscoeâ€™s Jesus Leanos had a team-high 19 points the boys led 10-6 after one period, 18-12 at halftime and 27-23 at the end of three quarters before holding off a late rally by Rotan. Dillon Freeman had six points, John Hermosillio four and Cutter Davilla and Keeston Ford two apiece.
