The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 143 calls for service, issued four citations and made 13 arrests from Jan. 6-8, 2012.
The SPD received 68, 911 calls.
Calls for service:
â˘ Assault â 800 block of E. 14th.
â˘ Burglary of a habitation â 900 block of W. Louisiana x2.
â˘ Criminal mischief â 1100 block of James.
â˘ Burglary of a habitation â 700 block of W. Arizona.
â˘ Criminal mischief â 600 block of Throckmorton.
â˘ Robbery â 1900 block of Chester.
â˘ Burglary of a vehicle â 1700 block of Hailey x2.
â˘ Burglary of a vehicle â 900 block of E. 16th.
Highlandâs Tyler Falcon has been named as a second team linebacker on the Six-Man All-Big Country foot-ball team by the Abilene Reporter-News and also received honorable mention as a running back.
Falcon had 76 solo tackles with 20 assists, 12 tackles for a loss and seven sacks, and also forced four fumbles and recovered one.
SHS hoopsters try to keep the wins coming
On Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, the Sweetwater Police Department led a search along with the Nolan County Sheriff's Office, 32nd Judicial District Attorney's Office investigators and the Department of Public Safety at 209 E. Avenue B, after obtaining a search warrant.
According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley, several people were allegedly operating a methamphetamine lab in the house and selling the controlled substance from that location.
During a called School Board meeting held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, Highland ISD School Board voted to hire Duane Hyde as their new Superintendent.Â
Hyde was previously in the position of the schoolâs Secondary Principal, a position that he has held since 2005.Â Prior to that, he had also been principal for Merkel ISD and for Blackwell CISD.Â His experience also includes math teacher, coach and Athletic Director.Â
The Sweetwater Police Department is currently investigating a robbery that took place over the weekend on the 1900 block of Chester Street in Sweetwater.
On Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, officers responded to the home in which three people allegedly entered the home of an 82-year-old man by kicking the back door open, held him against the wall and took items from his home.
Items stolen include money, a watch and several other items. No arrests have been made in the case, but officers continue to investigate.
The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers in Nolan County â cancer survivors, caregivers, community leaders, anyone wanting to make a difference in the fight against cancer â to organize and recruit fundraising teams, garner community support, coordinate logistics, seek refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment and lend a hand to ensure the success of the 2012 event.
Cheryl Lynn Brown Hampton, 64, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, in Arlington. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Arlington. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Moore Funeral Home on Davis Drive in Arlington. Cheryl was born June 30, 1947, in Roscoe, daughter of the late Bill L. and Justine Brown of Snyder. She married Don J. Hampton on June 12, 1965, and in the following years gave birth to two daughters, Kellie and Paige, and raised their family in Arlington.
CLYDE â Christopher âChrisâ Anthony Noice, 23, of Irving, died Thursday at a Dallas hospital. Services will be held Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Clyde with Dr. Toby Henson officiating. Private graveside services will follow in the Eula Cemetery under the direction of Bailey-Howard Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Sweetwater boys basketball team slowly fought back Friday from a six-point deficit early in the fourth quarter ot its non-district game at Mustang Gym, finally taking a one-point lead (59-58) on a field goal by Tino Martinez that came with 1:32 left and capped an 11-4 surge. However, the Bearcats came back to score the gameâs last five points and escape with a 63-59 victory.
