Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital employees strive to be the number one contributor to the Nolan County United Way with a donation of $13,946. Wes Sims was re-elected to a ninth consecutive two year term as President of the Texas Farmers Union (TFU) during the organization’s 110th annual convention in San Antonio. Sims, a family farmer and cattle producer from Sweetwater, was first elected in 1996 to lead the Texas family farm and ranch group.
Jason S. Blake, an Edward Jones financial advisor in Sweetwater, qualified for the firm's 2012 Financial Advisor Leaders Conference.
This conference recognizes financial advisors who are among the leaders in the financial-services firm.
Blake was one of only 570 financial advisors who qualified out of the firm's more than 11,000 financial advisors.
The 2012 conference will be held in May at the firm's headquarters in St. Louis, Mo.

February is American Heart Month. To observe this occasion Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening. There will be pamphlets and information available on cholesterol. SNCHD stresses the importance of good health and encourages the community to take advantage of the monthly events that are sponsored each month.
The health department will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20 for President’s Day.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 44 calls for service, issued four citations and made two arrests on Feb. 13, 2012.
The SPD received 89, 911 calls.
Calls for service:
• Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — 200 block of E. Fourth.
• Criminal mischief — 500 block of W. New Mexico.
• Information only — 1500 block of McCaulley.
• Theft — 2000 block of E. Broadway.
Arrested by SPD:
• Israel Salazar, 21 — Family violence assault.
• Eloy Gomez, 32 — Warrant.
Graveside services for Betty Rae Langston, 79, of Roscoe, will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home, with Rev. Thomas Fogleman officiating.
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, from 7-8:30 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Langston died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at Cogdell Memorial Hospital in Snyder, Texas.
SNYDER — Down by 15 before even scoring their first points, the Sweetwater Mustangs staged an impres-sive rally to cut Snyder’s lead to 46-43 after three periods of play. But the Tigers hit 12 free throws in the fourth quarter as they held on for a 60-50 win on Tuesday in the District 5-3A finale for both squads.
The most frequent Tigers’ visitor to the foul line was Malik Davis, who connected on 7-of-10 for Snyder in the final 83 seconds to ice his team’s first win in district play. Both teams finished with 1-7 records.
The Highland boys basketball team ended its seas-on by losing to Roby, 47-31, on Tuesday.
Shelby Howard had eight points to lead the Hornets while Ethan Wilson had seven, Ron Covington six, Kevin Box four, Sheldon Hall three and Kaden Nach-linger, Brandon Stevens and Zach Cornett one.
Highland finished its sea-son with a 3-9 record in District 11-A, Division II and was 6-21 overall, while Roby heads to playoffs with a 9-3 district record, second only to Ira’s 11-1.
