Jaycees preparing for Round-Up

February 18, 2012

Media Day for the Rattlesnake Round-Up was held on Friday morning, Feb. 17, 2012 at the Sweetwater Jaycees barn.
During the event, Jaycees showed the 2012 Miss Snake Charmer pageant contestants a demonstration of milking a rattlesnake. Jaycees were on hand to answer questions from the contestants about the snakes while helping the girls interact with the rattling reptiles.
The 2011 Miss Snake Charmer winner, Laney Wallace, began the annual tradition of decapitating and skinning the rattlesnakes, which led the way for this year's pageant contestants to also partake in the custom.

Young Mustangs look to improve

February 18, 2012

Sweetwater High School will field a young baseball team when it begins its 2012 season Tuesday at San Angelo Lake View.
Only three seniors — none of whom held a starting spot a year ago — are on the roster. And of the 12 underclassmen, only five either started or got a significant amount of varsity playing time in 2011.
But those five players all earned first- or second-team all-district recognition, and two of them — outfielder Ryan Linebaugh and catcher Sean Morrow — are entering their third year as varsity starters.
