Cancellation

The Sweetwater Junior Varsity Mustang baseball game with Wylie has been cancelled for today. They will play a double header on Saturday, April 7, 2012.

Plowbots harvest awards

The 2012 U.S. FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) was held the first weekend of March for the Regional events in San Antonio. Competing in that Regional were 64 teams representing a number of states and Mexico. The game this year was entitled “Rebound Rumble.” Traveling down to the Alamo Regional was the Roscoe Plowbots who made their third straight appearance in the FRC contest. The objective in the game was for teams, along with their alliance teams, to score as many baskets in goals that ranged from two to eight feet high.

High Sky Children’s Ranch and the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center have once again partnered to host the Seventh Annual West Texas Child Abuse Awareness Family FunFair in Sweetwater. The FunFair will be held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex on Wednesday, April 4, from 4-6:30 p.m. The Time of Remembrance will start at 6:05 p.m. and organizers ask that everybody stay for the ceremony honoring children who have been victims of child abuse.

Hudson Moore to perform in Sweetwater

JavaJax will be hosting a very special, mid-week live music performance on Wednesday evening, March 21. En route from Austin's SXSW (south by southwest) Music Festival to a show in Lubbock on March 22, Hudson Moore will be playing in Sweetwater.

Pedro P. Elizardo, Jr., age 88, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Nolan Nursing & Rehab.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Lionel Mendez, Sr. officiating. Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangments are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Lifters place at state

All four of Sweetwater High School’s athletes placed at the girls state powerlifting meet that was held on Saturday in Corpus Christi.
Loni Mendez had SHS’ top finish, placing seventh in the 181-pound weight class. She lifted 795 pounds with a 315-pound squat, 165-pound bench press and 315-pound dead lift.

Biggest Winner contest kicks off Monday

Pictured is Gloria Isom, Shelia Ellison, Tanja Jennings and Linda Kite all employees at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department. They are busy getting ready for the Biggest Loser Winner Contest which became a nightmare on Elm Street with 47 teams registering for the contest. All team members will weigh-in on Monday at their designated location and the contest will kick-off at 6 p.m. at the Sweetwater High School track field.

Local girl competes in Abilene Idol

A Sweetwater girl has the chance to become the first-ever Abilene Idol.
Twelve-year-old Journee Pugh, a sixth grader at Highland ISD, competed in the preliminary round held at the Mall of Abilene on Saturday, March 3, 2012.
The talent competition is sponsored by Chorus Abilene and the Steve Arthur Family Foundation in Abilene.
Journee was one of 103 contestants who sang to advance to the final round. She is the youngest finalist out of twelve performers and three alternates; the oldest is 47.
