Improvements continue at SISD

Sweetwater Intermediate School (SIS) brought its campus report to the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees during their regular meeting on Monday evening, March 26 at the Administration Building.
Heather Moore, the principal at SIS, presented an overview of the school, noting that more departmentalization has been utilized this year. Tripods--clusters of three teachers--in both the fourth and fifth grades have been established to help prepare students for the new standardized test, STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness).

Local band performs at TMA Fan Fair

Shown are Anjelique and Sweet City Band of Sweetwater, who performed at the 2012 Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair, a three-day event in San Antonio from March 16-18 with over 100 bands performing throughout the day on six stages. Anjelique and Sweet City Band performed on Friday night and Sunday afternoon.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 29 calls for service, issued four citations and made one arrest on March 26, 2012.

The SPD received 21, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 600 block of W. Ave D.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jerry Meeks, 50 — Public intoxication with third or more offense.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served six civil papers and made one arrest on March 26, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Levi Garrett Kickler, 29, of Sweetwater — Warrant/motion to revoke probation and Tom Green County warrant/surety withdrawal.

Mary Lois Barham

Graveside services for Mary Lois Barham, 101, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Garden of Memories. Her great-grandson, Jeffrey Hampton, will officiate and interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home on Friday evening, March 30, from 5-7 p.m.
Barham died Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab in Sweetwater.

District competition starts heating up for SHS squads

The all-important district season starts today for the Sweetwater High School girls golf team when it plays the first leg of its tournam-ent at Wylie.
The final two legs of the 54-hole event will be played April 2 at Big Spring and April 9 at Brownwood.
The SHS boys golf team begins district play when it plays the first leg of its tournament Thursday in Snyder. Sweetwater hosts the second leg on April 3, and the final leg will be on April 10 at Wylie.

Mustang golf team is 2nd at Lamesa

The Sweetwater High School boys golf team shot 324 on March 21 to tie Levelland for first place at Lamesa’s one-day tournament, but lost a scoreboard playoff and claimed second place. Pictured from left are team mem-bers Guy Bond (94), Mason Andrews (82), Ryan Mercer (80), Dylan Torres (84) and Alex Castillo (78).
Three members of Sweetwater’s team were among the top 10 medalists in the entire tournament with Castillo’s second-place finish being the highest. Mercer placed sixth and Andrews 10th among medalists.

Tickets to banquet honoring Cain are on sale in Abilene

Tickets are now on sale for the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet which is scheduled for May 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center. Among those who will be honored at the dinner and induction ceremony are John Paul Cain of Sweetwater.
Deadlines are April 13 to order a table and April 27 for non-reserved seating. Tables or tickets may be purchased by calling (325) 668-3685. Forms are avail-able at the Big Country Hall of Fame Museum in Abilene or at www.bigcountryhalloffame.org.

Netters win medals at Levelland

Sweetwater High School’s varsity tennis team won a number of medals when it competed recently at a tournament in Levelland.
Chris Hernandez and Madison Meneses teamed to win first place in mixed doubles, while the girls doubles team of Addisyn Cleck-ler and Jenny Medellin took second place after advancing to the tournament finals.
The boys doubles team of Bryan Vause and Isaiah Hernandez was fourth and Stephen Shipp placed sixth in boys singles, while Teresa Perez-Poe and Kristen Casto were sixth and seventh, re-spectively, in girls singles.

JV Mustangs pick up lopsided wins against Abilene High, Jim Ned

Sweetwater’s JV baseball team won against Jim Ned and Abilene High in recent action at Newman Park.
Sweetwater beat Jim Ned 11-3 on March 17 and out-scored Abilene High 16-6 on March 24.
Hayden Reeves went 4-for-4 with a triple, and he and Daven Alvarez scored three runs to pace Sweetwa-ter’s victory over Jim Ned. Also hitting safely were J.P. Poe, Alvarez, Mike McCoy, Sean Norman and Isaiah McGee. Duanta Williams threw a seven-inning complete game with five strikeouts for the win.

Update: Trial begins against Robert Larry Williams

The trial against Robert Williams began on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 in the 32nd Judicial District Court with presiding judge Glen Harrison.
Williams is charged with engaging in organized criminal activity as part of the crack cocaine distribution house on 1110 Runnels which was busted by local and area authorities on October 6, 2010.
Jury selection began Tuesday morning, with the final twelve jurors being selected shortly after 2 p.m. Opening statements were heard starting around 3:30 p.m. from District Attorney Ann Reed for the state and David Thedford for the defense.
