Yogurt with Pear and Coconut
Makes 4 servings
Juice of 1 lemon
1/3 cup unsweetened shredded
coconut
2 tablespoons graham cracker
crumbs
1/2 cup Grape-Nuts or granola
cereal
1 tablespoon granulated stevia
extract, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 ripe pears, such as Anjou or
Bosc, slightly firm to the touch
3 cups 2% plain Greek yogurt
In medium bowl, combine lemon juice, coconut, graham cracker crumbs, cereal, sweetener and cinnamon.
Peel, core and finely chop pears.
Spoon yogurt into 4 bowls and top
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) in Sweetwater recently held their first annual 24-Hour Treadmill Walkathon on Friday, Feb. 17-Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 at the hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.
With February set aside as American Heart Month, the local hospital joined the nationwide effort to bring awareness to cardiovascular diseases. The American Heart Association (AHA) promotes physical activity and a healthy diet to lower the risk of developing heart disease while increasing overall health.
No matter how smart or gifted a child is, the involvement of the child’s parents or guardians in his or her school is vital to the success of that child. Most schools and educational organizations encourage parental involvement. There are even state policies in regards to parental involvement in the schools. That’s because parental involvement has proven to increase student success and make schools better.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has five dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a family of Shepherd mix puppies — two male and two female brothers and sisters —and their mother.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 36 calls for service, issued one citation and made two arrests on Feb. 28, 2012.
The SPD received 25, 911 calls.

• Burglary of a vehicle — 1300 block of Wardale.
Arrested by SPD:
• Jerry Meneses, 26 — Public intoxication.
• Ryan Ruiz, 20 — Warrants.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served four civil papers and made one arrest on Feb. 28, 2012.

Bobbie Nell Pierson, 75, of Sweetwater, died Thursday, March 1, 2012, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
No services are planned at this time.
Pierson was born March 21, 1936, in Cross Plains, Texas. She moved to Sweetwater from Abilene in 1972 after working for Hendrick Medical Center for six years. She became a Registered Respiratory Therapist and worked for Simmons Memorial Hospital and Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater from 1972 until 2007. She then moved south of Sweetwater in the country, where she began her retirement, enjoying gardening in her flower beds and fishing.
After taking a break from tournament action Tuesday and losing at Merkel 9-5, the Sweetwater High School softball team began play this morning at a tournament held in Big Spring.
Sweetwater has pool play games today against Clyde, Lubbock Cooper and San Angelo Central before the tournament switches to bracket play Friday. Sweet-water’s first game is against Big Spring’s JV at 9:30 a.m., followed by a game against either Odessa or Midland Christian that afternoon.
Sweetwater High School is sending 10 girls powerlifters to Monahans on Saturday to compete in the Region I meet.
