Growth continues in Sweetwater

Sweetwater has seen several new businesses in the past months, creating growth for the community and its economy. The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors honored Cornett Computer Repair with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at their office located at 204 E. Broadway. The office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chamber After Hours event today

Lone Star Ag Credit will host a Chamber After Hours event from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at their office located at 400 E. Third Street.
The local office building was built in 1993 after merging with the Roby and Colorado City branches. Tim Weldon is the branch manager for both the Sweetwater and Abilene offices; four workers are employed with the Sweetwater branch.
The Sweetwater office works within Nolan, Scurry, Mitchell and Fisher counties, along with parts of Borden and Kent counties.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 36 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on March 19, 2012.

The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

Marvin L. Denning

Marvin Leonard Denning, 68, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Marcilla Cecile Denning (his daughter-in-law) officiating with Masonic Memorial Rites performed by the Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571. Marvin had requested to be cremated under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Ernest Calvin Miles

Funeral services for Ernest Calvin Miles, 81, of Franklin, Tenn., formerly of the Roscoe area, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Jerry Payne officiating. Interment will follow in Roscoe, TX under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Odessey Hospice, 717 North Harwood Street, Dallas, TX 75210.
Miles died Wednesday, March 21, 2012, in Franklin, Tenn.

SW rallies in 7th to stun Wylie 8-6 for 1st district win

Sweetwater’s 8-6 win over Wylie on Tuesday has dramatically changed the team’s outlook through the first two games of the 2012 District 5-3A softball season. And the Lady Mustangs’ victory could not have been more dramatic.

Stangs get no mercy from Wylie

Sweetwater ran into a high-scoring Wylie team when the teams met in their District 5-3A base-ball opener here Tues-day, and the Mustangs were soon in a hole from which they never recovered. The Bulldogs needed just five innings to decide the issue at Newman Park as they came away with a domi-nating 16-1 win that was ended by the 10-run mercy rule. Sweetwater fell to 6-7-1 overall, while Wylie improved its season mark to 9-3.

Report: Gated Area Where Remains Found Never Searched by Investigators

Update:
According to CBS affiliate KOSA in Midland/Odessa, at the time of Hailey Dunn's disappearance, a company called American Limestone owned the land now owned by Desert Tanks, where the human remains were discovered on Tuesday.
It is being reported that American Limestone did not keep their gates locked, often leaving them open.
It is believed that since the area was gated, investigators never searched it after Dunn's disappearance.

Eight enter guilty pleas

Eight entered guilty pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court on Monday, March 19, 2012. The cases were prosecuted by District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas. Judge Glen Harrison presided over the cases.
Speedy Rudolfo Zambrano, with attorney Tom Rees, Jr., pled guilty to possession of marijuana, a state jail felony.
Zambrano was arrested on Aug. 22, 2010, when local authorities found a large marijuana plant growing in his yard.

Biggest Winner kick-off challenges 48 teams

The Big Country Biggest Winner contest kick-off took place on Monday, March 19, 2012, at the Sweetwater High School new gym. Members from several of 48 teams were at the event to get motivated and win prizes geared towards weight loss.
