SNYDER â The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the annual multi-county âLower Rolling Plains Agricultural Conferenceâ from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, at the Scurry Coliseum, 900 E. Coliseum Drive in Snyder. âšâThe conference will cover all the important topics facing our areaâs agricultural producers in the season ahead,â said Zachary Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County. âšâThe topics will range all the way from cotton economics to dealing with feral hogs and everything in between,â he said.
A group of local Girl Scouts recently helped to beautify their community by painting the First Financial Bank Research Center, as it will be called. The Center is located on the corner of Locust and East Third Streets in Downtown Sweetwater, on the First Financial Bank property. The Girl Scouts included girls from Troop 7051 Nikki Gutierrez and Victoria Gutierrez, from Troop 7050 Faith Boyd, from Troop 7051 Shania Boyd, Emma Foust, Gabriella Olguin and De Ann Frazier and from Troop 7000 Taylor Shamblin and Christa Arnold and Sweetwater's service unit manager Judy Leighow and Liz Sands.

National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities. This yearâs NIIW is April 21-28. Infants are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases; that is why it is critical to protect them through immunizations. Each day, nearly 12,000 babies are born in the United States who will need to be immunized against 14-vaccine-preventable diseases before age two.
Farm Service Agency Texas Acting Executive Director James B. Douglass today reminded landowners, farmers and ranchers in Texas that the opportunity to enroll in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) general sign-up 43 ends on Friday, April 6. Producers who want to offer eligible land for CRP's competitive general sign-up may enroll at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office where their farm records are maintained.
The Texas State Technical College West Texas Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program is the first college in the area to earn national accreditation through The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Jeremy Dan Jacques, 40, of Sweetwater, will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Charles Okonkwo officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A rosary will be said by Deacon Bill Butler on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at 7 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Jacques died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Starting today, a number of Nolan County high school athletes will be competing in district competition with hopes of advancing to the next level.
For some, that hope could be realized as soon as this weekend while others may have to wait two weeks or more to learn their fates.
And for the Sweetwater boys and girls track teams, this week will be spent in preparation for their district meets that wonât be held until April 11-12.

SNYDER â After starting a four-game road gauntlet through District 5-3A with an impressive 14-8 win over Brownwood on Tuesday, Sweetwaterâs baseball team had a chance to move into undisputed second place by beating Snyder on Friday.
But after taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, things gradually fell apart for the Mustangs as Snyder â which came in desperately needing a win after starting out district 0-2 â roared back for a 13-6 win at Moffett Field.
SNYDER â After being held to no runs and just two hits through the first four innings, the Sweetwater softball team scored three runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory at Snyder to leave both teams in a tie for second place in District 5-3A at 2-2.
