On Wednesday, middle school bands from across West Texas participated in UIL Concert and Sight Reading Competition. The Sweetwater Middle School Band earned a first division plaque on their prepared music event, which was performed at Abilene Cooper High School.
âI was really pleased with how they did,â commented SMS band director Ross Grant. âThe kids really rose to the challenge. One of our pieces, âAdrenaline Engines,â was also performed by 5A Abilene High Schoolâs second band. It is actually a high school piece. Our students really pulled it off.â
Sedan â Margaret Irene Conner, 64, of Sedan, Kansas formerly of Sweetwater, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012 at her home in Sedan.
She was born March 11, 1948, in Shidler, Okla. to Henry Coleman Smith and Billie Jean (Burke) Smith. She grew up in the Shidler area before moving to Sweetwater, Texas where she graduated from high school in 1966. After high school she married Gene Shaffer and they later divorced in 1980.
After escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth and scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning, the chances of Sweetwaterâs baseball team getting into the Class 3A playoffs were looking good here Friday night.
But a 3-2 lead evaporated when visiting Big Spring came up with three runs in the top of the seventh, and the Steers held on for a 5-3 win at Newman Park to bring a heartbreaking end to the Mustangsâ season.
