High Sky Children’s Ranch and the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center have once again partnered to host the Seventh Annual West Texas Child Abuse Awareness Family FunFair in Sweetwater. The FunFair will be held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex on Wednesday, April 4, from 4-6:30 p.m. The Time of Remembrance will start at 6:05 p.m. and organizers ask that everybody stay for the ceremony honoring children who have been victims of child abuse.
The Sweetwater Police Department has recently handled a spike in sexual assaults of children -- committed by minors.
The local, collaborative efforts to bring awareness to child abuse was recognized during the 7th annual West Texas Children's Advocacy Center (WTCAC) banquet held on Tuesday evening, April 6, 2012 at the Nolan County Coliseum.
The theme for the evening was "Together We Can Help Children's Hearts Mend". which was highlighted through the evening's keynote speaker. Jennifer Morris, a business litigation attorney from Dallas, gave a stirring speech to the audience on her personal experience with child abuse and overcoming obstacles to achieve success.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has eight dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male Shepherd mix, two male mixed breed dog, male terrier mix and four Shepherd mix puppies — two male and two female.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued two citations and made one arrest on April 2, 2012.
The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

Doris Hodges, 77, of Sweetwater, Tx, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be Friday, April 6, 2012, at 2 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Reverend Mike Sells will be officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Family visitation will be Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.

The playoff prospects are brighter for Sweetwater’s softball team after Tuesday’s win at Big Spring, but the baseball team suffered its second straight setback to fall out of a tie for second place in District 5-3A.
SOFTBALL: Sweetwater 15, Big Spring 9
BIG SPRING — Sweet-water jumped out to a 13-1 lead after 4 1/2 innings, then held off Big Spring’s late rally to avenge an 11-7 district-opening defeat in Sweetwater on March 16.
The Sweetwater High School boys and girls golf teams are still in second place in their respective district tournaments de-spite losing some ground on the leaders in the second round this week.
The Sweetwater girls — who were just one shot behind Snyder after firing a 356 in the first round — now trail Snyder by 33 strokes with 18 holes left. The top two teams will advance to the regional tournament in San Angelo on April 18-19, so Sweetwater must main-tain its position in order to advance.
