Freshman art student Amber Hernandez advanced from the regional level to the State Visual Art Scholastic Event with her "Watercolor Hands". The event was held at Bryan High School April 13-14 where there were 1400 high school art entries from all over the state. Amber medaled with a superior rating. This is the first year Sweetwater High School has been represented by a freshman at State VASE. In 2007 Jacob Gamel received the highest award of Gold Seal for his charcoal "Self Portrait".
Gold & Silver Buyers, the largest purchaser of precious metals in the state of Texas is expanding into the Big Country, with a new location in Abilene at 3458 Catclaw (between AAA Vacuums and City Nails) and a location in Sweetwater, scheduled to open next month at 309 North East Georgia Street (next to Check âN Go).Â
Linda Yvonne Tidwell, 63, of Abilene and formerly of Roscoe, died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Mrs. Tidwell was cremated and no services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Fred M. Springer was born June 30, 1928 in Washington, D.C. to George E. and Marguerite Springer. They were of Iowa ancestry who migrated west after the Revolutionary War. Fred is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution as his Dutch ancestors fought in the New York Militia. He was raised in Houston, Texas so viewed that as his home having graduated from Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in 1945.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 53 calls for service, issued 21 citations and made three arrests on April 19, 2012.

On Saturday, March 17, in Sipapu, New Mexico the Sipapu Ski Resort held its 9th Annual Cardboard Derby. The Cardboard Derby continues to grow in participants and spectators every year. This yearâs event the âTeam Divisionâ was won again by âThe West Texas Wind Runnersâ consisting of team members Chris Hamlin (duct tape specialist), James Hamlin (driver) and Dustin Baker (stability).
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 67 calls for service, issued 26 citations and made five arrests on April 18, 2012.

James F. (Buster) Dunn was born on Jan. 4, 1929, in Crowley, Texas. He passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Texas State Veterans Home in Big Spring, at the age of 83.
