Last week of Big Country Biggest Winner — Who will win?

Monday, May 14, will be the last day of the Big Country Biggest Winner contest. All persons still in the contest must be weighed by Monday and have the weight reported that same Monday. No wights we be taken after that. To wrap-up this contest the originator and one of the sponsors Nolan County Medical Reserve Corps and the other sponsors Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, The Sweetwater Reporter and Texas State Technical College will have an award ceremony at Newman Park Pavilion on Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m.

SHS graduate named Nurse of the Year

Lubbock Heart Hospital announced that Kristen Martin, BSN, RN, Cardiac Critical Care Unit Charge Nurse, was named the 2012 Nurse of the Year.
Kristen is a graduate of Sweetwater High School and she received her BSN degree from the Texas Tech School of Nursing in 2003. She started her nursing career at Lubbock Heart Hospital in 2006.
“I am so honored to receive the LHH Nurse of the Year Award. I would like to thank my team members in CCCU and those who nominated me,” Kristen stated.

Local churches planning Mother’s Day services

Yields: 6 servings
1/4 cup Dijon-style mustard
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey
2 teaspoons snipped fresh rosemary
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Dash cayenne pepper
2 pounds beef sirloin

Cain inducted into Big Country Hall of Fame

Former Texas Tech University and Senior PGA Tour golfer John Paul Cain of Sweetwater was inducted this past Monday into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame in Abilene. He is shown speaking at the banquet held at the Abilene Civic Center.

Two dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has two dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male beagle and a male pit bull. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Nolan County received an ample amount of rain on Thursday, May 10, 2012. The following are rainfall amounts for the county.
Oak Creek, 2.10 inches; Lake Trammell, 2.00 inches; Lake Sweetwater, 2.00 inches; Filter Plant, 2.20 inches; Booster B, 1.90 inches; Wastewater Plant, 2.40 inches; Well Field P.S., 1.90 inches; and CR 151, 1.60 inches.
The following are rainfall amounts for the month of May in Nolan County.

Vivian Ann Goodman

Vivian Ann (nee Boyd) Goodman, aged 70 years, passed away in her home on May 9, 2012, in Driftwood, Hays County, Texas, enduring three decades of multiple sclerosis. She was a mother and homemaker to her children. She was a passionate genealogist with published research.
Vivian was born Jan. 20, 1942 to Vivian and Ruby (McElroy) Boyd in Sweetwater, Nolan County, Texas, where she lived until her family moved to Groves, Jefferson County, Texas in 1954. She attended Port Neches-Groves High School. There she met and married Elton Ray Newsome (USAF-Retired).
