On Saturday, May 12, 2012, at approximately 10:28 p.m. officers of the Sweetwater Police Department were dispatched to the 1900 block of Lamar Street in Sweetwater in reference to a male subject who appeared to have jumped off of the bridge that serves as an overpass to Interstate 20 crossing Lamar Street. The top of the bridge is approximately 20 feet above the ground.
The male was identified as a hispanic resident of Sweetwater and it appeared that he suffered a broken left arm. Sweetwater EMS arrived on the scene and the patient was flown to an area hospital via helicopter.
LeAnn Dowdy was recently announced as the 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year at East Ridge Elementary for Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District).
She is a second grade teacher at the school and has been with the district for two years. Dowdy has been teaching for a total of fifteen years; she earned her Bachelor of Science degree through Abilene Christian University and Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Teams of Nolan and Scurry County residents will gather at the Sweetwater High Track and Field on May 18, at 7 p.m. for an overnight Relay against cancer. This year’s event marks the 10th anniversary of the Relay in Sweetwater. Both Nolan and Scurry County survivors, caregivers and all who wants to fight back against cancer are invited to join the Sweetwater event this year.
The Sweetwater High School Band recently participated in the Director’s Choice Music Festival in Dallas. They played their three competition pieces from the recent UIL contest in Abilene. The Mustangs earned a superior rating from all three judges, along with a “Best in Class” trophy and a “Best High School Band of the Contest” trophy. Sweetwater outscored a Texas 5A school in order to win their final trophy.
