In the article from yesterday's paper stating the primary election results, I incorrectly noted that Jerry D. Hulcy earned the Nolan County Commissioner Precinct 1 seat. While he did in fact earn more votes in comparison to current commissioner Terry Willman (118 to 73 votes), this was only a primary election. This race will officially be determined following the November elections. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused to the readers and those involved in the election.

When you try to picture what a farmer looks like, you probably donâ€™t picture a woman. But women operate more than

3 million farms in Americaâ€”making them a large part of raising your food.
The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club is joining forces with Pappy's Bait and Grill Shop to sponsor a Kids Fishing Tournament to be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012.
The event will be held at the Lake Sweetwater Boat Ramp, with the competition running from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
The entry fee is $5 per entrant, which includes lunch, gifts and prizes that will take place after the tournament. Prizes will be awarded for the Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish and Outstanding Angler to the following age groups: 3 to 5 year olds, 6 to 8 year olds, 9 to 12 year olds and 13 to 16 year olds.
Jerry Dewitt Washington was found guilty of possession of a controlled substance, namely cocaine, and was sentenced to 8 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) with a $1,000 fine on the second and final day of his trial held in the 32nd Judicial District Court on Wednesday, May 30, 2012.
Testimony from the defense was slated to begin shortly after 8:30 a.m., but conflicts with a potential witness who was considering testifying led to an extended recess period.
The East Ridge Elementary School PTO, with the help of students, teachers and parents, held many fundraisers throughout the 2011-2012 school year to be able to purchase new equipment for their classroom teachers.
The East Ridge PTO raised the funds necessary by holding their annual ABC Pie Sale, several popcorn and pickle sales, The Santa Shop and PTO also ran the concession stand at the Mustang Bowl.
Carola Martin was recently named Teacher of the Year for Sweetwater Middle School within the Sweetwater Independent School District. She is a seventh and eighth grade science teacher.
Martin's entire teaching career â€” spanning 26 years â€” has been with Sweetwater ISD. She earned her Bachelor's of Science degree in Ed. Biology and Life/Earth Science from Abilene Christian University.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 56 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on May 29, 2012.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on May 29, 2012.

Service for Nellie Henry, 103, of Sweetwater and formerly Lamesa, will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church with Cora Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 1, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home.
Graveside services for Carlee Monette Pope, 85, of Sweetwater, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2012, at Sweetwater Cemetery with her daughter, Pat Duke, and nephew, James Hall, officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Pope died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
She was born June 18, 1926, in Royston, Fisher County, Texas. She married Dan H. Pope in November of 1945, in Roby. She was a member of the Baptist Church. She lived in Sweetwater since 1965 and was a homemaker.
Pauline (Polly) Warton, 91, of Austin, Texas formerly of Sweetwater, Texas passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2012. She was born Feb. 2, 1921, to Presley Paul Cooper and Virginia (Simmons) Cooper in Roby, Texas. Polly had been a resident of Austin, Texas since 2004. She started and funded a Church in Onida, South Dakota and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Texas, a member of the Eastern Star and Elks Lodge and was heavily involved with the Pastoral Care & Counseling Center in Abilene, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband Ben William Warton, Sr. in 1997.
