Technology allows local Marine to witness son’s birth while overseas

Technology has made great strides, but its evolution and capabilities gave one couple the chance of a lifetime: to be together for their child's birth while being apart, half a world away.
Eddy Gossett is a 2001 graduate of Sweetwater High School. Only a month after graduating, on July 30, 2001, Gossett joined the United States Marine Corps and underwent recruit training.
He has been with the Marines for almost 11 years, and he is currently on his fourth deployment in Afghanistan with the 1st Maintenance Battalion as Assistant Convoy Commander and Platoon Sergeant.

Local Fourth of July events planned

The Sweetwater Lions Club will be hosting the annual Fourth of July parade on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Nolan County Courthouse. The theme is "Americans Serve!" Anyone wishing to participate in the parade needs to be at the Courthouse at 9:30 a.m. for line-up. All of the service groups in the area are encouraged to participate. Decorated bicycles, wagons and floats are welcome in the parade. The parade will go east on Broadway to Elm Street. It will turn north on Elm, by the County-City Library and will end in the Nolan County Coliseum parking lot.

Man arrested for indecency with a child

A local man was recently arrested for indecency with a child by contact. Felipe DeJesus Lozano, Jr., 18, was arrested by the Sweetwater Police Department after he admitted he had touched his 10-year-old relative inappropriately according to officials at the Sweetwater Police Department. The charge is classified as a second degree felony and if found guilty, Lozano faces 2-20 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and a fine of up to $10,000.

Three pets available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has three dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male chihuahua, a female mixed breed dog and a female Labrador mix. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Chamber donates to BCCHA

Foster presented a check to Gully from the Chamber of Commerce for $18,500 on Friday, June 29, 2012, during the first day of the BCCHA cutting horse show at the Coliseum. This is the fourth year the Chamber has donated to BCCHA.

Fourth all class reunion planned

Another “All Class Reunion” for Homecoming 2012 is planned for Saturday, Sept. 8, from 2 p.m. to midnight at the Sweetwater High School Cafeteria, according to Linda Kiser Browning Miller, event director.
Jeff Stein of KXOX Radio will be the emcee, and Big Boys BBQ will cater the supper at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. and a short program will be held at 5 p.m. After the barbecue supper, J.B. Cloud of KBCY Radio of Abilene will serve as D.J. for the music and dance beginning at about 7:30 p.m. The D.J. will present music from the 50’s to the present.

Linda Lanette Fege, age 66, went home to the Lord on Thursday, June 28, 2012 in Arlington, Texas surrounded by family.
Funeral services will be at Normandy Avenue Church of Christ in Sweetwater, Texas on Monday, July 2, 2012 at 10 a.m. with Mike Ensminger officiating. Burial will follow at Slater’s Chapel Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, July 1, 2012 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Gloucester, Virginia — Carlton B. Cowan, Lt. Co. (Retired) USAF passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2012. A highly decorated Vietnam era veteran, holder of the Bronze Star, Carl loved his country passionately and served honorably for 20 years from Vietnam to Europe to Central America.
An avid fly fisherman and hunter, he was happiest when discussing politics and philosophy, as well as art and literature. A lifelong Republican, he served as chairman of the Gloucester Republican Committee for the past two years.
