A crisis intervention seminar will be presented by the Texas State Technical College Chemical Dependency Counseling Program from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at the TSTC Conference Center in Abilene, located at 650 E. highway 80. The seminar is free and open to the public.
From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Lori Bunton of the Regional Crime Victims Center will speak about crisis of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault.
From 1:30-2:30 p.m., Katherine Lewis of Hendrick Hospice will speak about crisis of grief.
A Babysitting Camp will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Texas State Technical College activity center.
Those attending can get ideas for food, games and activities to do with the kids they are babysitting, which will be housed in a notebook that the participant gets to take home along with many other great ideas for babysitting. There will also be CPR Certification available and demonstration of first aid techniques.
Cost for the camp is $50 for students ages 13-18 years of age only.
Lubbock â€” Parker Scott, Nolan County 4-H'er, was awarded a 2012 Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship sponsored by Richard Wallrath Education Foundation for $10,000.
The scholarship was one of 251 totaling over $2 million awarded by the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation during the 2012 Opportunity Awards Ceremony June 11 in United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.
Charles Henry Roberson, 85, a man very involved in many local organizations and activities, died on Friday, July 13, 2012.
He was a faithful member of Greater Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Treasurer and as a member of the financial committee. He was a member of the Sweetwater Country Club, a Red Coat Member (Ambassador) of the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce, Goodfellows, Big Country Medical Reserve Corps, United Way and the County-City Library Board.

One person pled guilty during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, July 16, 2012.
Branden Thomas Almanza pled guilty to evading arrest, enhanced with one prior conviction, a state jail felony.
For his plea, Almanza received 12 months confinement in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He will have to pay a fine of $500, $309 in court costs and $500 in attorney's fees. He will receive 198 days credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail.
As your child becomes a teenager, you may feel you no longer have much influence on your teenâ€™s decision making, especially when it comes to details like dating, abstinence, sex, and birth control.
The good news is parents count. Recent research shows that when parents communicate their attitudes and values about teen sexuality to their children, their teenagers are less likely to have sexual relations at an early age.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 143 calls for service, issued eight citations and made five arrests from July 13-15, 2012.
