Avondale to host block party, VBS

Avondale Baptist Church will be having Vacation Bible School July 8-11. They will kick off the week Saturday morning, July 7 with a Block Party on the corner of Hailey and Lou Streets across from the Village Apartments for the entire community.
At the block party the church will have games with prizes. They will have cotton candy, pop corn, snow cones and hot dogs for lunch. They will start the day off at 9:30 a.m. and end around 12:30 p.m. All ages are invited.

Mustang season ticket renewal begins July 9

Reserved season tickets for the 2012 football season will be up for renewal to current option holders beginning Monday, July 9 through Friday, Aug. 3.
Tickets are $30 for five home games and may be purchased at the Sweetwater ISD administration office. Reserved ticket sales for the general public go on sale on Monday, Aug. 6 during regular business hours and continue through Friday, Aug. 24. Summer hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday. For more information, call the administration office at 235-8601, ext. 116.

FSA County Committee nominations sought

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that county committee election nominations began June 15, 2012. Farmers, ranchers and landowners are encouraged to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the August 1, 2012 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.

Encompass Home Health hosts fan drive

Encompass Home Health in Sweetwater hosted a fan drive, giving away box fans free to the public on Friday, June 29, at their local office, located at 1008 Lamar Street.
Encompass Home Health staff identified a need for this service while making home visits in and around the area. They noted that many of the elderly did not have air-conditioning or simply would not run their air-conditioner because of high utility costs.

Registration deadline to vote in primary is today

July 2, 2012

Texans who are eligible to vote, but not yet registered are almost out of time to register to vote in the July 31, 2012 Primary Runoff Elections. Voter registration applications must be postmarked no later than today, Monday, July 2, 2012. Information on how to register to vote in Texas can be found at www.votetexas.gov, or by calling the voter registrar in a voter’s county of residence.

First Financial Bank hires Davis

The Board of Directors of First Financial Bank, N.A., Sweetwater announced that Gayle Davis has joined First Financial as Assistant Branch Manager and Banking Officer for the Merkel branch.
“We are excited to have Gayle on our team,” said Kirby Andrews, President and CEO. “Gayle’s banking knowledge and extensive experience will be a valuable asset to the bank and to the Merkel community.”

Martha Allene DeBusk

Funeral services for Martha Allene DeBusk, 99, of Lubbock, formerly of Sweetwater, will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Rev. Chris Stephens will be officiating with interment to follow at Sweetwater Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until service time at McCoy Funeral Home.
DeBusk died Saturday, July 1, 2012, at Hospitality House Nursing Home in Lubbock.

Two more teams try for semis

The Sweetwater Junior Leaguers are in the District 5 semifinals, and two more local all-star teams have a chance to do the same by winning their final pool games tonight.
The 9-10 year-old stars play Jim Ned at 6 p.m. at Abilene’s Cal Young Park while the 11-12 year-olds play Merkel, also at 6 p.m., in Snyder. The Junior Leaguers (13-14 year-olds) play their semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Abilene North at Abilene North’s field, where a win will send them to Thursday’s championship game at Wylie.
Semifinal play for both the 9-10 and 11-12 year-olds begins Tuesday.
