If you’re a driver who has too much to drink at a Fourth of July barbecue, or you’re a party host, restaurant or bar owner who’s concerned about a guest who’s overindulged and want to make sure that person gets home safely, AAA Texas is offering members and non-members alike our Tipsy Tow program. It’s a program designed to make sure everyone who needs a ride home during the holiday gets home safely.
Two blood drives will take place in Sweetwater on Thursday, July 5, from noon until 6 p.m. One blood drive will take place inside the Lions Club building at 1501 Lamar, and a bloodmobile will be parked at the Nolan County Courthouse. Blood shortages occur most often during the summer months, especially around holidays.

Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E.12th, will have their annual immunization fun day event on Wednesday, July 11 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-6 p.m. This is a normal day for immunization clinic but the health department has set this day to emphasis the importance of making sure your child’s immunizations are up-to-date. The health department plans to make it a special day for the children; each child receiving immunizations will receive rewards. Also, parents will have a chance to win a $50 gas card.
Many local students in grades second through eighth attended a drama camp at Sweetwater High School, led by Sweetwater High School drama students and SHS drama teacher Melody Copeland. A show of Copeland's adaptation of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe took place at on Friday, June 29, 2012, at the SHS Auditorium.
One person entered a plea to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, July 2, 2012. District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas prosecuted the case.
Jared Seth Davis, with attorney Peter Lopez, pled true to revoking his probation. Davis was originally put on probation on Feb. 25, 2011, for forgery, a state jail felony.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 150 calls for service, issued three citations and made 10 arrests from June 29 through July 1, 2012.
The SPD received 92, 911 calls.

Funeral service for Dorothy Velta Huffstutler, 68, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2012, at Faith Harvest Pentecostal Church with Rev. Jimmy Don Bennett officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Huffstutler died Tuesday, July 3, 2012, in Abilene.
Two Sweetwater Little League all-star teams have advanced to the District 5 elimination round and will play semifinal games in Abilene today, while a third local team narrowly missed joining them.
Sweetwater’s 11-12 year-olds advanced by shutting out Merkel 6-0 in their final pool game to finish with a 2-1 record, and join the three pool winners as as a wild card entry after having the lowest runs-allowed per inning ratio of the pool runnerups.
A Sweetwater team com-prised of 16-18 year-olds, all of whom played for Sweet-water High School’s varsity baseball team this past year, represented District 5 this past weekend when it played at a Big League Section 2 tournament in Garland.
Sweetwater won its first two games to reach Sunday’s championship game before losing twice to Arlington, which advanced to play in a Big League state tournament at All Saints High School in Fort Worth starting this Friday.
