West Texas Innovation Network co-sponsors Entrepreneur Boot Camp with ACU to assist new business start-ups

The West Texas Innovation Network is co-sponsoring an Entrepreneur Boot Camp to assist new business start-ups. The boot camp will be held Friday, August 10, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hunter Welcome Center on the Abilene Christian University (ACU) campus.

Funeral services for Kathleen Bessent Hackfeld, 79, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Chapel, 1415 Parker Street in Goldthwaite, Texas with Pastor Gilley officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery in Priddy, Texas under the direction of Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the funeral home.
Hackfeld died Monday, July 23, 2012, in Sweetwater, Texas

SMS cheerleaders attend cheer camp

The 2012-2013 Sweetwater Middle School Cheerleaders attended Cheer Camp at Texas State Technical College this week in preparation for the next school year. Camp instructors were Aubra Hendrix and Kelsey Jones.

SWEET H2O CONCERT ON OAK: An event is being planned to offer the community of Sweetwater “something to do” this summer — an event in Sweetwater and for Sweetwater, Nolan County, and all of our region, that celebrates our place in West Texas. This is an opportunity to come together and improve our quality of life, to promote the arts and entertainment, boost our cultural awareness, support the local economy and to just have fun.

TxDOT hosts public meeting

A public meeting was held on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 by TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) on the project rehabilitating Lamar Street (BS 70-G) in the administration classroom at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Starting at 1 p.m., TxDOT staff was on hand at the informal, open-house meeting to answer questions and take comments. Citizens could come and go as they pleased to view exhibits of the proposed project while offering input.

City tax rate decreases

The Sweetwater City Commission approved the proposed tax rate for the 2012 tax year during their meeting on Tuesday morning, July 24, 2012 at City Hall.
The approved, proposed tax rate for the 2012 tax year now stands at $.4630 (46.30 cents) per $100 valuation. City Manager Eddie Brown noted that the rate had been at 48 cents for the past five year, but the increase of valuations led to the decrease of the tax rate. This new tax rate will also come in under the rollback tax rate.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 36 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on July 23, 2012.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 500 block of E. 14th.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 800 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 200 block of SE Georgia.
• Information — 1500 block of E. 17th.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on July 23, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• John Ryan Rylander, 33, of Iraan — Midland County warrant.

Youngsters enjoy football camp at Bowl

A large group of students entering grades 3-9 have invaded Mustang Bowl this week to participate in a Mustang Football Camp.
In addition to emphasizing skills and drills, the camp includes punt, pass and kick instruction and competitions.

Chamber donates to WTRA

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau recently gave a donation of $16,500 to the West Texas Rodeo Association.
Several rodeos were held in April through July leading up to the Finals, July 20-22, 2012, at the Nolan County Coliseum.
