Numerous citizens headed to the Nolan County District Appraisal Office on Thursday morning, July 19, 2012 in protest of the increase of tax values. An employee of the office noted that the high number of protesting citizens came as a surprise; the heavy traffic in the office is expected to continue for the next couple of days.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that county committee election nominations began June 15, 2012. Farmers, ranchers and landowners are encouraged to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the August 1, 2012 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.
Drivers in Texas are now paying an average of $3.29 according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.Â Thatâs up six cents from last week, but still 30 cents lower than this same time last year.Â Motorists in Ft. Worth are paying the most on average at $3.39 and drivers in Corpus Christi are paying the least at $3.16. Nationwide the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is now $3.44, which is 15 cents higher than the average price Texans are paying. Motorists in Sweetwater are paying an average of $3.29, 12 cents higher than last week.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on July 18, 2012.
The SPD received 13, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served two civil papers and made nine arrests on July 18, 2012.

â¢ Shahala Monett Strother, 39, of Sweetwater âÂ Hinder apprehension or prosecution of a known felon.
Melba Jo Spence Weaver went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 12, 2012, at the Seaton Hospital in Round Rock, Texas, after a short illness.
A memorial service will be held at the Kingsland Community Church in Kingsland, Texas, on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m.
She is survived by her husband, Gaylon Weaver; one son, Garon Weaver and wife Trina; three daughters, Lori Weaver, Twilla Bucksath and husband Tod and Torisa Keener and husband Dustin. She is also survived by one sister, Jimmie Ruth Kennedy and husband Jack.
The Reading Program Party took place at the County-City Library on Wednesday morning, July 18, 2012. The party was held for those who turned in their blue reading logs.
Dianna Adams and Joe Rivera, members of the Sweetwater Community Band, kicked-off the party by leading the children in songs and telling riddles and jokes. Ice cream with assorted toppings was later served, and the readers also took part in a scavenger hunt and received award bags that included a certificate.

The Nolan County Grand Jury handed down 32 indictments, 24 of which were sealed.
Four of those indicted included Dalton James Dauel, Timothy Rene Cantu, Xavier Rene Limones and Rita Jo Chase for engaging in organized criminal activity, a first degree felony. Court documents state that the four knowingly manufactured, delivered or possesses with the intent to deliver methamphetamine in the amount of 400 grams or more on Jan. 6, 2012. Their bonds were each set at $25,000 and they each face 15-99 years or life in prison if found guilty.

Discussion was held on the upcoming 2013 budget during the meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors' meeting held on Monday evening, July 17, 2012 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
The 2013 Capital Budget was presented to the board, following the submission from each department on items they wish to have. The items were then prioritized into three different groups; the first priority group needed to be approved, in which several items were highlighted.
Tex Amanda (Brown) Meachem took off on her final flight on July 5, 2012, in the care of Vitas Hospice of Florida at John Knox Village, in Pompano Beach, Florida. She was 94 years old.
Tex Amanda Brown, named after her grandmothers, âTexannaâ and âAmanda,â was born in Tallahassee, Florida on Feb. 4, 1918. A few months later, the young family moved to Winter Garden, where Tex completed all her schooling, graduating as the Salutatorian from Lakeview High School.Â
