One jailed during arraignments

July 17, 2012

One person pled guilty during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, July 16, 2012.
Branden Thomas Almanza pled guilty to evading arrest, enhanced with one prior conviction, a state jail felony.
For his plea, Almanza received 12 months confinement in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He will have to pay a fine of $500, $309 in court costs and $500 in attorney's fees. He will receive 198 days credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail.

The importance of parental involvement

As your child becomes a teenager, you may feel you no longer have much influence on your teen’s decision making, especially when it comes to details like dating, abstinence, sex, and birth control.
The good news is parents count. Recent research shows that when parents communicate their attitudes and values about teen sexuality to their children, their teenagers are less likely to have sexual relations at an early age.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 143 calls for service, issued eight citations and made five arrests from July 13-15, 2012.

The SPD received 74, 911 calls.

• Forgery of financial instrument — 400 block of Arkansas.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 700 block of E. Arkansas.

• Assault by threats — 200 block of SE Georgia.
• Theft — 200 block of SE Georgia.
• Information — 800 block of E. 16th.

Smalley Foundation offers training in Sweetwater

To any first responders in and around Nolan County, the Smalley Foundation will host a gas pipeline training awareness class will take place at the Sweetwater Fire Department. The class will be held in the training room on three separate nights including Tuesday, July 31, Wednesday, August 1, and Thursday, August 2, at 6 p.m. each evening.
The mission of the Smalley Foundation is to increase safety and awareness for those who live, work and play near the nation’s oil and gas sites and pipelines through empowering the general public, training first-responders and partnering with industry.

TxDOT hosts public meeting on Lamar Street project

Sweetwater — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) invites citizens to attend a public meeting about a project to rehabilitate Lamar Street (BS 70-G) on July 24, from 1-8 p.m. in the administration classroom at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital at 200 E. Arizona Avenue in Sweetwater.
The proposed project would improve Lamar Street from Avenue B to I-20. Work would include rehabilitating the existing roadway with new base, asphalt pavement, sidewalks, signs and pavement markings. Plans call for the project to be built in phases with one side of Lamar Street closed at a time.

RPMH receives Oncor grant

Shown are Donna Boatright, Administrator of Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and Jim Clements of Oncor. 
Clements is shown presenting Boatright with a City Matching Grant Program check for $40,517. This was awarded as a result of the energy conservation measures taken during the hospital's recent renovations.
"I am really proud that we were able to achieve these energy savings and receive the grant.  Jim is a great emissary for Oncor and has supported RPMH and encouraged us to work toward this grant.  We are very appreciative of Oncor for making this incentive available," said Boatright.

Man dies after Nolan County crash

One person was killed and one injured in a one vehicle crash occurring on U.S. Highway 84 at the intersection with Farm Road 1982 in Nolan County.
The crash occurred in Nolan County on Wednesday, July 11, at 6:40 p.m. One of the injured was pronounced dead late last night, July 15.

SW all-stars eliminated in sectionals as rally falls short

CARROLLTON — In a short span of time, the Sweetwater 11-12 year-old Little League all-stars’ Section 2 semifinal against Waco Midway on Saturday went from being a near-blowout to a nearly miraculous finish.
Trailing 7-1 going into its final at bat in the bottom of the sixth inning, Sweetwater scored four quick runs to close the margin to 7-5, chase two Waco Midway pitchers and bring the go-ahead run to the plate with no outs and runners at second and third base.

Meet the Coaches event is Aug. 16 at SW’s Dairy Queen

Sweetwater High School fans will get a chance to meet the new SHS coaches at a “Meet the Mustang Coaches” event which is set for Thursday, Aug. 16 from 6-8 p.m.
The event will be held at Sweetwater’s Dairy Queen on 1608 Lamar Street.
All of the proceeds from the event will be used for the Sweetwater High School athletic program.

11-12 stars get split in 1st two sectional games

Sweetwater’s 11-12 year-old Little League all-stars faced elimination Saturday after splitting their first two games at a Texas West Sec-tion 2 tournament held in Carrollton.
