Highland to have Meet the Teacher, Big Blue Preview

Highland Independent School District will have their Meet the Teacher event from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23.
PTO members will be serving brisket sandwiches from 5:30-7 p.m.
Also, the Big Blue Preview will begin at 7 p.m. in the Activity Gym. Students are encouraged to bring their families to meet and greet each other and the Hornet athletes.

Pre-K classes offered at J.P. Cowen

Sweetwater ISD prekindergarten classes are offered at J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center in the mornings and afternoons. To be eligible for enrollment in a PK class, a child must be 3 or 4 years of age on Sept. 1 of the current school year and must:
1. Be unable to speak and comprehend the English language.
2. Be educationally disadvantaged (eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program).
3. Be homeless.

Preliminary autopsy results revealed on body found at park

According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda, the preliminary autopsy results for the body found at Newman Park on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, were revealed. The body was sent to Lubbock for an autopsy. The results of the autopsy indicated that the man found, Robert Owen Geiger, 67, of Sweetwater, died of self inflicted injuries made by three gunshots by a small caliber gun.
On Friday, midmorning, the Sweetwater Police Department received a call about an individual laying near the tank at Newman Park in Sweetwater with gunshot injuries.

Three vehicles involved in morning wreck

Three vehicles were involved in a wreck on Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, 2012 on the corner of Josephine and Hailey Streets in Sweetwater.
Sweetwater EMTs were dispatched to the scene and at least one transport was made to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
No further details were available by press time.

Work continues at Sweetwater schools

Several schools within the Sweetwater Independent School District are receiving renovations before the new school year begins on Monday, Aug. 27, 2012.
Shown above is Sweetwater ISD employee Sammy Ramirez at the Sweetwater High School. A new glass window and glass door will replace a brick wall in the PEP program room at the high school.

Lubbock, TX — Ray Arnold Johnson, 76, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Forrest Heights United Methodist Church in Lubbock with Rev. Ross Dunn officiating. Graveside services will be held at Decker Cemetery in Nolan County, TX on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
A family visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, at Franklin Bartley Funeral Home, 4444 South Loop 289, Lubbock, TX.

Mary Katheren (Thomas) Arrington, 67, of College Station, Texas passed from this life peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012. A private family committal service will be held at a later date.

Lady Stangs back on road after placing 2nd at Canyon

The Sweetwater varsity volleyball team’s extended road swing — which contin-ues today at Seminole with a dual match against both Frenship and Seminole — has been productive so far.
The Lady Mustangs are 6-4 overall after defeating 5A Abilene Cooper 25-12, 25-22, 25-20 in Abilene on Thursday and then placing second in the Silver Bracket of Canyon Randall’s two-day tournament.

Freshmen win Sweetwater volleyball tournament

Sweetwater’s freshman volleyball team went 4-0 to win the Sweetwater tourn-ament. Sweetwater defeated Southwest Christian 25-17, 25-15; Snyder 26-24, 20-25, 25-16; Big Spring 17-25, 25-12, 25-23; and Post 25-10, 25-13 in claiming the championship.

The SPD received 67, 911 calls.
