Dove Hunting season officially kicks off this Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012. The season is open until Oct. 24, 2012, and runs again from Dec. 22, 2012 to Jan. 6, 2013. Nolan County Game Warden Jake Simmering would like to remind all hunters young and old, inexperienced and veteran, to be sure all guidelines and regulations are followed during this hunting season. Hunters can pick up the Outdoor Annual (free of charge) anywhere hunting and fishing licenses are sold â€” Higginbotham, Wal-Mart and The Medicine Place are places in Sweetwater as well as online at tpwd.state.tx.us.
To better meet the needs of potential students, the Texas State Technical College Sweetwater admissions office will be available evenings and weekends through Wednesday, Aug. 29. The office will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Today was the first day of school for students within the Sweetwater school district. A group of second graders gather in the cafeteria at East Ridge Elementary School on Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, ready for the new school year.

Sweetwater Independent School District Superintendent Terry Pittman announced Saturday evening, Aug. 25, 2012, that the Tax Ratification Election (TRE) passed with a vote of 218 for and 9 against. Mr. Pittman has said that this election represented a veryÂ opportune time for the school district.
"With property values in the county having increasedÂ tremendously as of late, the passing of this TRE election has allowed SISD to make a beneficial shift to the funding structure and still lower the overall tax rate of the taxpayers."
Local businesses and churches were at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, to be part of the Community Connections Fair for new TSTC students and their families. New students moved into their dorms and attended orientation as well on Sunday.

Despite persistent weather delays, Sweetwater got in 26 plays â€” 16 on offense and 10 on defense â€” in its final scrimmage Friday at San Angelo Lake View before play was halted.
The Mustangs produced an impressive 135 yards, 86 of it coming on 6-of-10 passing, with their new spread offense and scored against the Chiefs on a 7-yard run. Another Sweetwater drive reached Lake Viewâ€™s 4-yard line before coming up short.
Sweetwater will host Eastland this Friday to begin the regular season.
NEW ORLEANS â€” For-mer Sweetwater High School and University of Texas-El Paso standout Joseph Banyard rushed for 25 yards on seven carries in the New Orleans Saintsâ€™ 34-27 exhibition win over the Houston Texans on Saturday night.

A significant change in bus routes will be made for this new school year within Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District). All of the busses will now be meeting at Sweetwater Middle School (SMS)--instead of the previous meeting spot of SHS (Sweetwater High School).
A "practice run" of the new improvement took place on Wednesday at the middle school. SISD Assistant Superintendent Kathy Smartt noted that one of the advantages of this improvement is that a large number of elementary students in town will be taken home before older students board the bus.
The New Teachers Luncheon was held on Friday, August 24, 2012 in the Center Seminar Room at the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas.
The event was hosted by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
Executive Vice President of the Chamber, Jacque McCoy, welcomed the new teachers and their corporate sponsors, thanking the teachers for their work with the children of the school districts.
