Six teams making first appearance at Classic

Labor Day weekend is the traditional sign of the end of summer and the unofficial start of fall. It also means the start of the 2012 high school football season.
For Sweetwater, fans get an extra treat starting Thursday as the eighth annual Sammy Baugh Classic begins its three-day run at Mustang Bowl with four games on tap this year. Serving as the co-sponsors for 2012 will be Family RV Center and First Financial Bank.

Public invited to view trainers at TSTC

Texas State Technical College is rolling out the red carpet on Thursday, Aug. 30, to welcome the arrival of new hands-on tools in the Automotive Technology shop. The public is welcome to attend and receive hands-on demonstrations of four state-of-the art trainers (two light diesels, one hybrid and one compressed gas). There will be a short program at 10 a.m. Representative Susan King, TSTC Chancellor Mike Reeser and TSTC West Texas President Gail Lawrence will make remarks.

V’ballers back on road today at Graham

Sweetwater’s volleyball team will stay on the road for a dual match today in Graham after placing third in the Silver Division at San Angelo’s Nita Vannoy tournament this weekend.

Flash Mob at SMS

Students at Sweetwater Middle School had a surprise waiting for them Monday at a back-to-school opening assembly. A lecture on classroom discipline was suddenly interrupted by a flash mob of teachers dancing to Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."
Sweetwater Middle School principal Jeff Withrow said that he wanted to do something exciting and different for the students this year.

Supplies donated to local schools

Two local churches — Emmanuel Fellowship Church and Lamar Street Baptist Church — got together this year to host a school supply drive for local students in need in Kindergarten through high school. Their goal was to help at least 50 students and their goal was exceeded.

County meeting includes public hearings

During the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, August 27 at the Nolan County Courthouse, the first public hearing on the proposed property tax rate for 2012-2013 was held, with no input given.
The proposed tax rate was presented at the August 16 meeting at .394635 (39 cents) per $100 valuation--a combination of the general fund rate of .340670 and the farm to market fund rate of .053965 (both per $100 valuation).
The second public hearing on the issue was then approved by the commissioners for their next meeting scheduled for Monday, September 10, 2012.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 123 calls for service, issued six citations and made six arrests from Aug. 24-26, 2012.

The SPD received 72, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Credit card abuse — Sweetwater.
• Class A assault — 800 block of Circle Drive.
• Unauthorized use of a vehicle — 400 block of E. Avenue D.

Arrested by SPD:
• Daniel Jones, 22 — Possession of marijuana.
• Sipriano Ybarra, 63 — Family violence assault.
• Jonathan Barton, 48 — Nolan County Sheriff's Office warrant.
• Lacey Vornkahl, 19 — Criminal mischief.
• Bay Velasquez, 32 — Warrants.

Dora Mae Burklow

LUBBOCK, TEXAS – Dora Mae Burklow passed away peacefully on Aug. 28, 2012, at Lakeridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Lubbock, where she was a resident for the past year. Services will be held at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater, Texas on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at 2 p.m. with Reverend Josh Reglin officiating. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.
She was born Nov. 18, 1915, to John and Fannie Bardwell at their rural farm home near Nolan, Texas.

Benita “Betty” Martinez, 67, of Sweetwater, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Her wishes were to be cremated. No other services are planned at this time.

Shirley Faye Pendergrass

Shirley Faye Pendergrass, 69, of Port Arthur, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Medical Center of Southeast Texas, Port Arthur. She was born June 2, 1943, to Helen Tait Fullwood and Wilson Fullwood, in Sweetwater, Texas. Shirley graduated from Sweetwater High School and moved to Port Arthur in 1963. She worked for Best Plumbing as a bookkeeper for over 10 years and after that worked alongside her husband at their automotive repair shop, H & B Automotive, from 1988 until 2008, when it closed. Shirley enjoyed bowling, fishing, gambling and spending time with her family and friends.
