Sweetwater resident, Irma Cantu, has been cooking and baking for the majority of her life. The oldest of five children, Irma was born in Lamesa, raised in Roby, and has resided in Sweetwater for the last 35 years. She is married to Adam Cantu and has two daughters, Jennifer and Monica Cantu, and three grandchildren.

Large number of CNAs at Sweetwater Healthcare

Sweetwater Healthcare Center recently celebrated the graduation of seven of their staff members from Nurses' Aide to CNA (Certified Nurses' Aide) with a party in their honor on Tuesday afternoon, August 7, 2012.
Debi Cory, the Director of Nursing at the senior living facility, noted that this is the largest number of CNAs that have been on staff at the same time at Sweetwater Healthcare. As a CNA, total care of the patients is their responsibility — this includes assistance with feeding and cleaning while monitoring weight and hygiene, among other tasks.

So many of the stereotypes associated with bikers are of the negative kind. Bikers tend to be avoided and are assumed to be violent individuals, and even worse when in a group. The general population only see leather clad, bandana-wearing, tattooed men and women that are loud, heavy drinkers, use colorful profanity and participate in all forms of debauchery. But would you believe there are a group of bikers that don't fit the common stereotypes?

Ribbon cutting held for TanLand

Located at 606 E. Broadway is TanLand, owned and operated by Sondra Reeves. Reeves, who recently moved back from San Angelo, opened TanLand on Saturday, July 7, and offers by the minute, monthly and yearly memberships for tanning beds, in-house or mobile spray tanning (service by appointment only). Currently her hours are 3-9 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Reeves will soon be adding clothing and accessories to her inventory.

V’ball camp action

Two volleyball camps are being held this week at Sweetwater Middle School. Some of the girls in the morning session, which runs through Friday, are shown here. An afternoon camp is also being held through Thursday at the SMS gym for younger girls.
Volleyball players at the high school level are also having their first workouts this week at the SHS gym to get ready for the 2012 sea-son, where the Lady Mustangs’ opening matches will be played here next Monday and Tuesday.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 42 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on Aug. 6, 2012.

The SPD received 33, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 700 block of James.

Arrested by SPD:
• Matthew Woodall, 17 — Theft.
• Jacory Royal, 17 — Theft.
• Female Juvenile, 16 — Directive to apprehend/evading.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served no civil papers and made three arrests on Aug. 6, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Lashondrick D'Lon Richardson, 21, of Sweetwater — Warrant/bond forfeiture.

Tonight, the chance of precipitation continues with scattered showers and thunderstorms forecasted, partly cloudy skies, and a low of 76. East to southeast winds at 5 to 10 mph will change after midnight and come from the south.
