Special flag presented to Jaycees

At the Annual Sweetwater Jaycee Awards Banquet held Sept. 22, 2012, U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Eddy Gossett, along with U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Albert Rodriguez, presented a flag flown on the battlefield in Afghanistan to the outgoing and incoming presidents of the Jaycee and Rooster organizations.
Staff Sgt. Gossett and Lance Corporal Rodriguez are both Sweetwater natives and recently returned from deployment.

See You at the Pole™ is Sept. 26

“AWAKEN”(from Ephesians 3:14-21) is the theme for See You at the Pole 2012, the annual global day of student prayer. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7 a.m. at schools across the United States.
This is the 22nd anniversary for See You at the Pole, a student-initiated and student-led movement that started in the Ft. Worth suburb of Burleson, Texas in 1990. SYATP brings students to their school flagpoles to intercede for their leaders, schools and families, asking God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campuses and city.

SMS offering electives classes

In the midst of their technological transition, Sweetwater Middle School is making even more headway by announcing a wide range of electives classes to be offered at all grade levels.
Starting on Monday, September 24, the elective classes will take the place during the regular tutorial hour--fifth period, with the mindset of learning more about students' "unique experiences, interests and learning styles" in order to "guide, support and motivate" them.

Nerd Day at SHS

Memorial rodeo honors two teens lost in well accident

It was a weekend of celebrating at the Nolan County Coliseum.
"Everybody knew them and loved them," said Karen Reeves, Nick Walker's mom.
Nick Walker and Jeremy Claxton died in a well accident in April. Though months later, the community has come together to help out as much as they can.
"It means a lot just having everyone come and remember him and know that they're all still loving him and missing him," Karen explained.
And the memorial for the two boys was simply fitting.

Lady ‘Stangs lose District 4-3A opener to Monahans

After an impressive win over Monahans in Game 1, things went downhill for the home team in Saturday’s opening District 4-3A volleyball game as Sweetwater lost to Monahans in four games at Mustang Gym.
The Lady Loboes rallied from a 25-20 opening loss to defeat Sweetwater 25-18 in the second game, then won 25-23, 25-16 to claim the match.
Sweetwater (0-1, 20-12) also enjoyed a 17-14 lead in the second game when Monahans (1-0, 17-14) went on an 11-1 run to even the match, and after that Sweetwater was never able to regain the upper hand.

Hawks soar to win over S’water

WALL — After a 19-point win at Breckenridge the previous week, Sweetwater never got comfortable when it paid a visit to a very good Wall team on Friday.
The Hawks scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage on a 74-yard run by Grant Eubank, and never looked back in a 43-20 win over the Mustangs.
And Eubank’s head-turn-ing start was just the begin-ning of a remarkable first half for the 175-pound sen-ior, who accounted for five touchdowns before inter-mission in staking his team to a 37-12 advantage.

Highland scores 86 to bury Sands for 2nd win

There was no defense for the Highland Hornets on Friday when they traveled to Sands and claimed a resounding 86-44 win.
Highland (2-2) got five TDs by Ron Covington plus three scoring runs by Mich-ael Hyde in the game.
Covington had 46- and 50-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns in the game in addition to having three scoring runs of his own.
Highland led Sands by 10, 30-20, at halftime after Covington had his first kickoff return for a touchdown from 46 yards out with only 12 seconds left. Covington also completed the scoring in the fourth quarter with his 50-yard kickoff return.

Blackwell loses to Trent

Jayden Jones rushed for 268 yards and scored four touchdowns, one on a fumble return, for Blackwell on Friday but the Hornets were unable to hold a 10-point lead after three periods as they lost to Trent, 50-44.
Blackwell was outscored 16-0 in the fourth quarter as it fell to 2-2. Trent is 4-0.
In addition to Jones’ run-ning, Ethan Andrews threw for 58 yards and Franck Cano (3), Ted Chambliss (2), Mark Monroe and Jones had receptions. Jones had two fumble recoveries and Cano and Wade Allen one.
