Two pets available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has four dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a Labrador mix and a Pomeranian mix. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Hoyt House to host Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 5 at Hoyt House, located at 1700 Hoyt Avenue.
Hoyt House is owned by Assisted Living Concepts, with Whitney Ashford as the on-site manager.
Hoyt House is an assisted living facility that offers the comforts of home with the added safety and security loved ones need. They provide nutritious meals three times a day, housekeeping and laundry, and now have a full-time RN. They serve Nolan County and have 16 employees.

Girl Scouts hold fundraiser for Camp Boothe Oaks pool

A Labor Day event, “Burgers Buy the Pool,” was held on Monday, Sept. 3. The event was held as a fundraiser, hosted by JavaJax in Sweetwater, for the Nolan County Girl Scouts to help with their efforts in restoring the swimming pool at Camp Boothe Oaks.

Ribbon cutting held at Blackland Smokehouse

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, for a new barbecue restaurant in Roscoe, the Blackland Smokehouse. 
The restaurant is located on the north side of Broadway in downtown Roscoe between The Wildflower Boutique and Memorial Park.

Naurevelle Evans Rogers

Long time Nolan County resident, Naurvelle Evans Rogers, at 96 years, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, in Sweetwater. Services are set for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, at McCoy Chapel with Larry Fluitt officiating. Burial will follow in Sweetwater Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at McCoy Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Gerald, Kendell Cleckler, Jerry Riggs, Bill Stroman, Ronnie Rainey, Dr. Robert Martin, Chad Cleckler and Lance Evans.

Football player of the week

Marquees Jenkins has been named as Sweet-water High School’s Football Player of the Week.
Jenkins, a 165-pound junior running back and linebacker, ran for a team-high 101 yards in season-opening 23-13 win on Friday over Eastland on just nine carries. He also had four solo tackles, five assisted tackles and one pass hurry on defense.

Blackwell rolls past Westbrook, gets first on-field win since ‘10

BLACKWELL — After failing to get a win on the field for nearly two years, Blackwell finally celebrated a victory — and a lopsided one at that — here Friday as the Hornets dominated Westbrook, 54-6, in their season opener.
Blackwell didn’t waste a lot of time taking care of the Wildcats, either, as the game was ended at halftime by Six-Man’s 45-point mer-cy rule.

Wylie jumps into 3A poll at No. 7; Stephenville 8th

Abilene Wylie replaced Argyle as the No. 7-ranked team in Class 3A in this week’s Associated Press high school football poll following a 31-14 win over the Eagles on Friday.
Wylie — unranked in the AP preseason poll — jumped ahead of preseason No. 1 Stephenville, which lost to Monterrey (Mex.) Tech 27-17 in its opener and fell seven places down to No. 8. Argyle dropped out of this week’s top 10 in 3A.
Monahans, after receiv-ing enough votes to earn a No. 14 ranking in the Class 3A preseason poll, received none this time after losing to Midland Christian 42-28 in its season opener.
